Hi developers! Can you (or may be some advanced users) make Flightgear docker image? It would be great to have the latest flightgear release in docker image

First: dependencies! I'm on ubuntu 16.04 and I can't install the latest FG release because I have to compile OSG, Simgear and finally Flightgear. Flightgear in ubuntu repo or Siarcot ppa is too old. So the only way to have the latest FG release is installing Flightgear with all dependencies in docker image. There're images in docker hub for terragear and flightgear. But flightgear is the old version and it's only for POC (proof of concept)

I have a Dockerfile for FlightGear somewhere but never managed to get 3d acceleration working from within the container.
Any ideas how to get this running? I'd happily add the image to our dockerhub space if it works.

Did you try nvidia-docker?

use the d&c script and you'll have your own private installation in your user directory... no muss, no fuss... the d&c script has been worked on specifically to fix some of these problems... i'm on ubuntu 14.04 and running the latest FG next... i have additional Qt in /opt that i build against instead of fumbling about with older stuff...

saircot's PPA should not be "too old"...

sorry but that's not true... there are numerous ways... one could use a virtual machine running winwhatever if they really wanted to ;)

A virtual machine has its own kernel and often its own Operational System. Docker container doesn't need OS or additional kernel for work. For some reason I want to have the clean main system without numerous development files and libraries required for FG compilation. I can install any version of QT or another library in docker container separatly of main OS and I can delete it any time not changing my main OS. Sorry, it's ridicolous when for ONE game you have to install so many useless libs and apps

Flightgear in the Siarcot ppa is fresh - check https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+arc ... flightgear.
I'm on Ubuntu 18.04, using FG 2018.1.1 with release date 2018-04-19. Is it too old for You ? I downloaded it from that PPA, manualy installed 2 packages and all is OK.

Well, software that's compiled against some libs doesn't run without them - so whenever you have a running FG, you can be sure to have all the libs installed in some form. Under Win, they just come all wrapped up with the release package (which is correspondingly larger...)

not to mention that they are apparently not useless if they enable apps to execute properly ;)

I've tryed this ppa a couple years ago and FG don't work for me then. Ok, I will try it one more time again
P.S.:
HA-HA-HA! Good try. And I'm not even surprised. As a couple of years ago saiarcot ppa FG still doesn't work
Code: Select all
$ fgo

================================================================================

Starting /usr/games/fgfs with following options:
   --aircraft=c172p
   --airport=KSFO
   --fg-root=/usr/share/games/flightgear
   --fg-scenery=/usr/share/games/flightgear/Scenery

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/usr/games/fgfs: symbol lookup error: /usr/games/fgfs: undefined symbol: _ZThn40_N7simgear16PropertyBasedMgr10childAddedEP14SGPropertyNodeS2

$ /usr/games/fgfs
/usr/games/fgfs: symbol lookup error: /usr/games/fgfs: undefined symbol: _ZThn40_N7simgear16PropertyBasedMgr10childAddedEP14SGPropertyNodeS2

So docker image will save us

Many peoples have FG installed from that PPA and all is OK. There is not problem in that PPA, but somewhere on Your linux installation.

I think it's dependencies problem. I just changed saiarcot edge ppa to stable and try again
