TransGear FSWeekend Nov 6 & 7 1300 UTC!

Postby yourgod » Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:42 pm

Gijs approached Lukosius, Redneck, and I with an interesting idea that just seemed like a good thing to do. His idea was for TransGear to host an event both days during the Flight Simulator Weekend event which is being held at aerodrome museum Aviodrome at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands. This is the world's largest Flight Sim convention.

The TGA events will happen both days at 1300 UTC, and are single hub events centered on EHAM, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Gijs chose the spoke airports for this event.

The guys hosting the FlightGear booth at FSWeekend will use this TGA event to demonstrate the capabilities of FlightGear by showing a busy airport handling live arrivals and departures under ATC control.

The idea is pretty straight forward. You sign up for the single hub route on the transgear website. You'll choose a starting airport, and a destination airport.

On Saturday, you will fly the route you chose.
On Sunday, you will fly the same route backwards.

In other words, if you choose to start at EDDF, and end at LFPG, then on Saturday you will fly EDDF -> EHAM -> LFPG.

On Sunday you will fly LFPG -> EHAM -> EDDF.

This way you only have to register a single route to cover both days.

As always, we accept and encourage a wide range of general aviation and commercial airplanes. You will find the approved planes at the start of the registration process.

Also note that in many locations this particular weekend is when Daylight Savings Time ends, so while it's at the same time UTC, it will be at different local times if your DST ends that weekend.

I'm excited to be involved in this, and I hope you guys are excited as well. This is a great opportunity to show off FlightGear!

If anyone has questions, let me know. Now go register your route!

The regular TransGear event will also be held at the regular 2nd Saturday of the month. It will be announced immediately after the 2nd FSWeekend event and will start accepting registrations at that time.

This seems to be a very good idea! If I have time, I will definitely participate.

We'll be happy to have you.. Go ahead and register for your route. If you can only make one day then just sign up for the route you plan to fly that day.. The same schedule will be used both days, just the direction will change.. The route schedule is more of a log of who will be attending the event at this point.

Just a general note about the TGA site. I finally got around to writing a little script to generate the Approved Equipment page on-the-fly from the database the routing system uses. If you were wanting a concise list of all the planes that are approved for use with TGA, that's the place to look! Complete with links to the downloads, the class that we assigned to the aircraft, and the cruising speed we will use to calculate your flight times.

Um...for my TGA0009, I signed up to depart from LFPG, but it showed up as a different airport. (yes, I confirmed it as LFPG in the confirmation screen)
What should I do to correct this?

Thanks.

For this event you can essentially fly either direction, either day. It's preferred you fly forward on Saturday, and backward on Sunday, but it's no big deal either way...

I'd like to do this!!

However, the "Create A Route" link on the Transgear page is throwing me an error!!!

I get: The requested URL /transgear/cgi-bin/uncgi/tgaplanes.cgi was not found on this server.

If I use peices of the URL for the "view current schedule" link that was posted in this thread, I can get to:

http://transgear.treborlogic.com/cgi-bi ... planes.cgi

That works - but the link from the main Transgear page does not....

A question on your automatic routing. The cruise speed used for calculating is Indicated Airspeed or speed over ground?

One thing I remember being problematic before with using EHAM as a hub is that none of the tower frequencies are in the FGCOM phonebook.txt, which makes using FGCOM difficult.

The 122.75 channel can be used but since it has no range limit there is risk of interference from other players using it elsewhere in the Flightgear world.

I changed the link so that it's absolute and not relative. If your browser is behaving it should have worked fine before, it's been working on every machine and browser I've tried so far. But, either way, absolute URL's are hard to screw up!

I believe the speeds are ground speed at typical cruise. Redneck compiled the data so he would be better to answer the question since he knows what he used as his sources.

I'll look at the tower freq issue.. Gijs proposed the hub for aesthetic and practical reasons related to FSWeekend.. Push comes to shove 122.75 is an option, even if not a desirable one.
