TransGear seeks nominations for European Hub airports...

Postby MD-Terp » Thu Jan 07, 2010 9:27 am

Hello everyone...

It's not exactly imminent yet, but as TransGear Airways continues to grow month after month, it's time for me to start thinking down the road about opening a third hub. As I stated from the very outset, I always intended for that hub to be in Europe. Along the way, I was presented some very interesting ideas regarding flight scheduling, and so you all should expect that this hub will be done a little differently than the current model I have operating in the USA -- but, we'll get there in due time. :) :) :)

What I need for now are some ideas, "nominations" if you prefer, for airports in Europe that TransGear should consider serving. My main criteria are, (a) that they are substantial air-travel ports in real life (as opposed to an out-of-the-way, regional airport with little activity); and (b) that they have seen something by way of scenery enhancement, hopefully including a terminal building with jetways and maybe some auxiliary buildings.

Spacially I would hope to cover all of the major corners of Europe, as well, without having any two that are too close to one another. But I'll work on that.

For now, let's just start this way: what are the "prettiest" airports in FlightGear's virtual Europe?

Already in mind I have the following:
EDDF, Frankfurt-Main, Germany -- STUNNING modeling there.
EGLL, Heathrow, London, England -- decent terminal model.
EHAM, Schiphol, Amsterdam, Netherlands -- very complete modeling of entire airport grounds.

Paris, France -- I'd like to include EITHER Orly or Charles De Gaulle, but which is nicer?

... and, that's only four. I'd hope to have a total of eight, just like my hubs in the States. I definitely need an EVEN number.

Thanks for your suggestions! Screenshots might be good to include with your nominations as well!
Cheers,
-Rob.

Well - its nice that Europe gets involved. Here some beginnings:

You did do very well by naming EDDF -- of course with nominated ATC jomo
in Germany there are also the very nicely modeled: EDDL (Duesseldorf) and EDDT Berlin and EDDP Leipzig
EHAM Amsterdam of course is a must
EGLL i have not yet seen the model

you should add:
LIML: Italy Milano-Limate, the smaller (old) one with a very nice modeling -- while LIMC, the newer Milano-Malpense is bigger, but not yet modeled that complete)
EPWA: Polen Warschau, there is a nice model, even though not yet generally publicized (to my knowledge)
EKCH: Stockholm getting started strong with a half-completed model
so far for a startup

Hello MD-Terp,

Don't forget Helsinki/Vantaa, Finland (EFHK). Very nice model there.
Listen to some Sibelius while you're having a fly around ;-)

Kind regards.

I personally wouldn't want to have one in Paris (scenery is WAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOOOOO MUCH there and creates too much of a computer load), but the others that people have mentioned are good locations. Though it would be quite funny if we opened a hub at Gibraltar, which looks like this in this real picture, if you haven't seen it before:

It's really close to the city, and also has a huge rock right next to it.

Just randomly suggesting that we should have it be one of our destinations.

I'd pick:

EHAM - obviously
EGLL - airport's not that great, but there's add-on landcover scenery
LIMC - nicely modeled
LROP - also modeled
EFHK - also nicely modeled
EDDF
Maybe Copenhagen, maybe another German airport as well, maybe Innsbruck?

EHAM or EDDF is my choice...

And, ths is a bit off topic, but when we make an Asian hub, can we use RJAA (Tokyo-Naria) or VHHH (Hong Kong-Chep Lap Kok)?
Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

With helijah's addon scenery any of the airports in Corsica...LFKB, LFKC, LFKS, LFKG, LFKF, LFKJ(my favorite), or LKFO. Depending the central hub location might be a longish flights though. some pics

LOWI - ok no building but still a nice place... ;)

The hub should definitely be EDDF.

I'd be happy if there was a flight to EDDP. The place is pretty well modelled by now. It has the tower, terminal, hangar, DHL hub, and three bridges crossing the highway. It's just too overloaded (I was too enthusiastic last year). I'll take out a lot of .ac and .xml again soon so that we can enjoy high framerates there.

TGA is an airline/event hybrid, and owner (Rob) agreed to support but not merge...

Anywhom, EDDF or EHAM!!! (Compete with AVA and also act as a special ATC?)

My types:

EHAM, EGLL, EDDF, EDDT, EPWA (of course. I can provide scenery download), Kopenhagen, Edinburgh. (Pity, there is no Dublin airport done...)

Not all of them, but it's a base of choice.

Thanks, all, for the input. I actually have recently decided to give another idea a try. I'm cooking up a special schedule for the April event, and if it works out well, it might be something we adopt as a permanent new format. More details to come in a few weeks. I'm definitely gonna hold off until (a) after the March event and (b) until I have a more concrete plan before I unveil anything.

Sorry for the secrecy... but, if you like what I've done so far with these events, though, and can show a little faith, maybe you can trust me that we'll have a lot of fun in April... :)
Cheers,

Apparently the EPWA models are not in the scenemodels-database so that they don't automatically download with TerraSync - or am I wrong? Could you please send them to Martin to be added?

Cheers
