Happy New Year, all! It's that time... time to start claiming flights for the inaugural edition of TransGear Airways for 2010! There won't be any significant changes from last time to this time -- except a reminder that when you check in with Departure control (if there is one -- or, once you clear the runway, if there isn't one), please remember to include your expected SID path name if you're following one, or a generic direction of departure if you're not. Everything else should be fairly similar to events past; FGCom is still mandatory, but newbies, please consider yourself welcome!

Speaking of new folks -- if you are brand-new, but are pretty well-versed in following published flight procedures and have at least a basic knowledge of aviation communication, please consider yourself eligible for a USA West flight (200-level, into KSLC). Those who are not so keen on following published procedures and just want to fly in and interact with a live, voice-to-voice air traffic control situation, even if you're new to voice communications, please join us in the USA East region (100-level, into KBWI).

All you need to do to sign up is let me know right here in this thread which flight you would like to do! I'll be waiting for those reservations!

OH! Also, to help beginners ease into creating flightplans for use with the USA West hub, I have started a "Flight Plan Library" at the bottom of the charts & resources page, where previously flown flightplans can be catalogued and recycled. As of this writing, of the sixteen legs in the hub schedule (eight spokes times an inbound and an outbound leg each), only one test flight I just completed myself is listed. I encourage each of you to look over the format there, and send me the information on your own planned flight routes that I can post there to share with others. Thanks!

EDIT: adjusted the location of the library; now at the bottom of the Charts & Resources page.

Can I get the TGA115 flight?
I don't know why I pick it up most of the times. Never mind.
I hope that I get everything right this time
EDIT: Forgot to tell, going in a Beech 1900.

I think I'll take TGA244 this time, again with the 787. My arrival route will probably be SILOW1 BCE DELTA3 at FL400, with a departure route of WEVIC1 BCE CORKR MAIER3 at FL390.

Unfortunately I won't be competing this time. It's the middle of the summer holidays down this way and I will be away with the family at a beach somewhere (I live 300 miles from the nearest beach so will be utilizing the novelty extensively!!).

Definitely a shame as the West Hub flight was really enjoyable last month.

I will have my laptop with me, but as i won't be headset-equipped, I will most likely just drop in as a visitor/observer (not getting in the way of anything of course  ).

p.s. For those of you in the northern hemisphere who have been suffering a bit from the adverse weather conditions, it was 42'C here today (108'F), and has not dropped below 36'C (97'F) for the past week - definitely no white Christmas where I come from!!!

And I thought 30C was bad... Living near the beach has its advantages, makes the weather seem less hot :)

Since when did TGA become a competition  Well, I'm guessing your laptop doesn't have an integrated mic, since that's really all you need; the headset simply provides better quality. Anyway, I guess you'll have to see about flying with us next month....

The version of CVS I'm running broke autopilot on virtually every plane. I think I can still control the autopilot of the 777 using the cockpit controls. I'll test it this week again to be sure. If not I'll have to man the controls for the entire event.

Yeah, it does have an inbuilt mic, but the obstacle is more to do with convincing the boss (wife) to allow me to use it while on holidays.

Zakalawe's updated code base for GPS is to "blame"; however, the developers are aware of this and are, to my knowledge, working feverishly to update as many of the "key" models as possible in preparation for the new software version release. So you might find in the coming week that the 777 gets a "fix", and may even behave more like a real-world autopilot-with-GPS when it's all said and done.

That being said, it seems as if the software release has fallen well behind schedule, so it's good to have a backup plan!
