11. September 2001 commemoration

Postby TheEagle » Fri Sep 03, 2021 1:19 pm

In a weeks time, it's the 20. anniversary of the terror attack to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Because it turned two civil airplanes into deadly weapons, it's not only an important event in the history of the USA, but also in the history of aviation. I think we should in some way commemorate this tragic event.
My idea is to fly the routes of the two airplanes in two groups and meet at New York John F. Kennedy (KJFK). If someone could do ATC at KBOS (departure) and / or KJFK (arrival), this would be great !

Routes description

One group should fly the route of American Airlines flight 11 (callsign AA11) from Boston runway 4R to New York with aircrafts of the type Boeing 767-300ER (the original Boeing is a 767-223ER, but I couldn't find it for FG anywhere). All players should have the callsign AA11-xx where xx is to be replaced with a number. I will assign a number to each who announces on this thread that he wants to join.

The other group should fly the route of United Airlines flight 175 (callsign UA175) also from Boston to New York, but on a different route with aircrafts of the type Boeing 767-300 (the original Boeing is a 767-200, but I couldn't find it for FG anywhere). All players should have the callsign UA175-x where x is to be replaced with a number or a letter. I will assign a number / letter to each who announces on this thread that he wants to join.

In the end we will all meet at New York John F. Kennedy (KJFK) and have a silent minute in memory of the 2763 people who died on that day in the World Trade Center.

Participants and their callsigns

Group 1 : American Airlines flight 11

  • OY-NSA : AA11-01 (F16-AM fighter)

Group 2 : United Airlines flight 175

  • TheEagle : UA175-1
  • Praxxus : UA175-2 (F-35B fighter)

Schedule

Group 1 (American Airlines)
Departure in Boston (KBOS) 04R : 17:59 UTC
Arrival in New York (KJFK): 19:08 UTC

Group 2 (United Airlines)
Departure in Boston (KBOS) 09 : 18:14UTC
Arrival in New York (KJFK): 19:19 UTC

Notes

At startup, go into your property browser to /sim/time/gmt and set it to "2001-09-11T12:54:00" (without the quotes). That way you will be able to see the twin towers of the WTC in FG !

Both groups should be accompanied by 2 or 3 F-16 (or similar) fighter jets. Everyone wanting to fly a fighter, please drop me a message along with the type of your fighter jet and your desired group and I'll add you to the corresponding list above !

IMPORTANT: We are commemorating a very sad event, but this does not mean that we all have to cry  all the time ! (I hope you get what I mean  ). But the last minutes of the event should be really honouring the victims of this terror attack, and of course all the brave helpers at the crash site who put their lifes in danger to save these of all the people that were saved from the buildings before they collapsed.

If I missed anything, or wasn't sensible enough, please let me know so I can amend it !

Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the attacks Skyop (who was a scenery and aircraft developer, but no longer is active in the community) had made scenery models with some special properties:
skyop wrote in Thu Oct 28, 2010 1:37 am:In memory of all those who died during 9/11...

These new models are programmed to appear after their "top off" ceremony dates and before their collapse times on 9/11.

[Screenshot, since long gone]

During the night they light up the New York skyline, being the only models with night lighting in the NYC area (and the only static models as well, I believe).

[Screenshot, since long gone]

For 24 hours after their collapses, the buildings stand as a shining translucent monument; then they disappear.

[Screenshot, since long gone]

Models will be submitted to TerraSync and should be available within a few days.

I have checked and they are still there and function as they should.

We could meet up somewhere nearby, for example by the statue of liberty, and set back our clocks 20 years to watch this (set /sim/time/gmt='2001-09-11T13:54:00' and wait five minutes), have a silent minute and tell each other were we was and what we did when we first heard or saw the news and what went through our minds, or for the younger of us, when we first learned about the attacks. The towers collapsed about 13:39 and 14:28 UTC.

Also, do not feed the trolls, just check the ignore box on anyone doing anything stupid.

Sorry,
I cant believe you are going to form up in commercials and head into New York on this day.
At least have the dignity to form up and have a F-16 formation with smoke trails to lead you in. I would suggest Mavs group in Italy to provide the escort, as they do well with the Falcon blocks.
As I am British, I know the pain but I don't feel it as an American.

Yes - I am referring to J Maverick 16, he can cope with the logistics, give him a shout. If you wanna make it FG wide , get in contact with other FG groups ?
It is a memorial flight after all.

Sorry - I have included a group that has pre-planned Flight Nights. They may be willing to help, but I am unsure they will.

Hi Eagle,
That is a nice plan for an event. I would really love to do some ATC in America, but I don’t think I would be able at the right times. I wish you all the best though!
My passengers receive hazard pay... but at least I have fun.

Cheers,
Margot

@Matthew: well, actually, this event will probably take place in the evening (about 1:00 to 19:00 UTC) because most people will probably sped the day outside, as we currently have very good weather. In reality, the attacks happened at about 14:00 UTC, that would be right in the afternoon, where almost no one (including myself) will be flying in the PC.

I'd love to join on this event. Could I fly the American Airlines Flight 11 route?

Thanks,
