just to make "the point" about the Communication possibilities we have on FG at this moment

from ATC point of view:
a Comm Solution have to work for all and not only for a bunch. CAS users have to be able to hear each one others too.
Are you willing to have N communication at the same time ?
Are you 0K to discriminate some users in base of the used software ?
The answer seem obvious. Is it not ?

So the solution have to work in 3 places :
- your computer ;
- the server ;
- the computer off each other users.
Failing any of theses points will fail the goal to "connect peoples".

Voice Comm in FG are used for 2 goals (current result of users choice) :
- pilots and CAS services.
- 1st line help + some social exchange
(wishing it / not wishing it, the same happen in RL )

The current panorama of Voice Comm in FG is :
1 - FGCom
2 - FGCom-Mumble
3 - FGExtent-Mumble

Each have pros and cons.

FGCOM
Client :
+1
Working pretty well out of the box for Mac Linux and Windows - both FG integrated + "stand alone" version.
Server :
-1
not working (since a long time now)
Feel a bit sad about that, I had advocate it for many years and help many users to have it working ...
Evolution...

FGCOM-MUMBLE
Brought by the user BeniH.
Although it is still not at status "--usable by all--", a work that deserve to be saluted and tried.

Client :
-1
Not working "out of the box" and demand compilation + use of soft/lib not "mature/stable".

Bare in mind :
while some FG users are computer savvy and have no problem to compile any code,
a great number of other users are unable to compile anything.

Some others are using Linux with the goal in mind to have a not "adulterated" machine that
remain reliably ready for work.
Theses users will opt to --not-- install anything not from stables LTS repos.

These are users choice are have to be respected.
FG choice is to be open to All and not "reserved" for computer geeks.

That said, on Windows machines the client work quite well and is easy to install.

Server :
-1
Not always available.
In the Beni own words, his server is not provided as stable "resource"

The unfortunate consequence at the moment is that not savvy users are precluded to
communicated with other users.

FGEXTEND-MUMBLE
Brought by the user ICARE38 - Another work that deserve a try.

status : stable and "usable by all"

Client :
+1
any mumble version : stable and easy.
+1
FGExtend : free and available for Linux / Mac / Windows.

Mumble usable in 2 ways :
1. + FGEXTEND ;
2. normal usual way.

1. with FGExtend
you change frequency in your plane = FGExtend change for you the channel in Mumble (if station is in proper range).
e.g.
[ you ] - contact PESCARA TWR 118.450
[ pilot ] - TWR 18.45 thank you - Skylane 33
[ pilot ] set 118.45 in stanby freq ( a experient pilot would have it preset ) - depress xfr button - freq 118.450 become active.
[ FGXt ] change automatically the mumble channel to PESCARA TWR
[ pilot ] - PESCARA TWR - Skylane 33 holding short RWY 04 at CHARLIE
[ TWR ] - Skyline 33, line up 33, wait and report ready.
[ . . . ] . . .

Of course or you do need some else on TWR freq
or you do need to "bridge" TWR and APP channels like Services do when 1 ATC operate on several frequencies.

Range if the station is taken in account.
GND have typically a 5-10 NM range
TWR 15-25 NM
APP 60-80 NM

!!! Important !!!
No One need to click on channels to change channel ...
You even may have mumble and FGExtend running in backplane and forgetting them for the whole flight !
Just look at your radio in the plane !

2. Without FGExtend, the normal way

The usual way ... clicking as in any social tool ...

Note that the mumble server have a separate place for social non-ATC communications.

Server :
+1
Regular Mumble/Murmur

At radio-mumble . flightgear . fr the service is up from many years / 24 H . We may consider it as stable !
radio-mumble.flightgear.fr

The service is freely open to anyone. No password nor identification needed. just asked to use non offensive pseudo.
Several part in it :
I. the ATC channels ;
II. the "Hangar channels where any one find a place to chat in his language ;
III. Some additional specific channels for many uses even like special events.

Every user may create new channels at his will.
Theses are by default temporary and everyone may request to make them permanent.

There is currently in between 1000 to 2000 channels. mostly ATC oriented.

A regular registered ATC may obtain the right to link frequencies in his service.

A windows installer is under test to simplify the install for Windows users.

FGExtend https://fshare.udtq.fr/dl/OELmGZwJYTJ5?key=zmJMqSrdpkKJ9XT6EAf8
FGExtend pdf http://www.moohw.com/FGExtend/FGExtend_Tutorial_v1.0.2-extract-9-28.pdf

A mew murmur with :
- multichannel COM - VHF1 / VHF2 / VHF3 / HF1 / SATCOM
- ATIS facility recordable by the ATC
- CPDLC / ARCARS
- advanced control by the ATC
is as we speak underwork.

Discord
-2
I have intentionally left out Discord that really do not suite the ATC/aviation communication need
and continue to split our little community/

This the state of our Comms

So we do not have at that moment a 100% 0K communication tools.

Sorry the long post

Have fun.

Thanks for summarizing it up!

I just want to take the opportunity to give more details and maybe roadmap to fgcim-mumble.

The final goal is that once mumble 1.4 is released:
- we use the standard known fgfs mumble service
- one just installs mumble, downloads the plugin, installs that using mumbles plugin page install button
- install the fgfs-addon
- have fun

There is no need to compile anything yourself, even right now! Just use the precompiled fgcom-mumble plugin release. (For the mumble client currently you just have to use the right mumble 1.4 snapshot which may be hard to find, but that is temporary).

Also, as this is mumble based, you can do casual chit-chat the usual mumble way.

Hi!

Just FYI:
Building mumble 1.4 on Ubuntu 20.04 was a really easy task (even for me!), with only one potential pitfall - which I fell into:
The dependence on g++-multilib only applies if you are on a 64bit system and want to cross-compile overlay support for 32bit applications as well (which is enabled by default). If you don't do this (-Doverlay-xcompile=OFF when invoking cmake), you also don't have to install g++-multilib.

I misread that and didn't add -Doverlay-xcompile=OFF

Haven't tried with fgcom-mumble yet, though, pretty hopeful it will work!

Ciao,

Adrian
