And i have read in the wiki, that all we need is advanced weather + Terrain Effects and Generate Thermals activated therein.

Also be sure to have the latest ASK21 glider and the c182s addon version ready for towing :).

We can use the old assigned starting positions again:
(just drop them in the launcher location input box and adjust heading in the location dialog):

Please tell which one you'll use, so we don't crash into each other :)

- P1 47.292474, 12.789991 @160° (i'll take this one)

- P6 47.291663, 12.787390 @345°
left of P6 are still some spots left, if needed.

You might want to start directly with your glider on the runway and walk if forward before connecting.

TheEagle's scenery improvements: https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/Austria-scenery

ASK21-dev: https://github.com/ysopflying/flightgear-ask21
Alternatives:
LS4a
ASK13 (if you want to have it traditional)

- Starting time = noon
- Weather = manual input: "XXXX 121100Z 17010KT 12SM SCT052 FEW300 25/08 Q1022 NOSIG" (QNH is 30.17 inHG)

Hints on soaring:
If you have not yet done it, welcome to the most challenging and relaxing way of flying!
As above mentioned planes are JSBSim, it is recommended to turn the turbulence settings down.
Use advanced weather settings as described here: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Soaring
As in all of our evenings, we'd enjoy shared learning experience, so we can talk you through in case of problems with thermaling.
This video could be found useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Mw7ioso9YE
"ctrl-u" could be your friend as well, but this should give a beer to the group.

Thanks for TheEagle for towing service!

Wednesday information Mike: Alps destination Lodrino

Postby Volador » Fri Feb 11, 2022 5:20 pm

Information Mike: Alps, destination Lodrino LSML
Wednesday 16th Feb 2022, 19:00UTC

Have you recovered from Valentines day? Do you want to take your someone special on a wonderful Swiss trip or do you want to spend some time just flying with some pals and contemplating the world? This Alps excursion with special permissions for military bases will take us roughly South East from LSMA Alpnach (elevation 1460ft) to Lodrino LSML (elevation 850ft), but in-between we will cross the Alps at a height of around 8000 ft (powerful engine or turbo prop recommended) before a spectacular, long descent to LSML calling at a few airfields along the way.

Flying time is estimated by skyvector to be 49 mins but we should add another 30mins at least for the 3 stops, occasional unbridled, stacked-up landing chaos, getting lost, refreshments, and any other "das ist nicht gut" moments (which can be entertaining for all the wrong reasons) (and also learning experiences :D ). Allow 1hr30mins after wheels up. Do come early and say hi and if you're still talking to us afterwards there is often chat about ideas for other events or recap on technique and FG in general.

As always everyone is welcome to join the event, all we ask is to please post your general aviation aircraft (and say hi) ahead of time on the discussion thread (link below). You'll get a warm welcome so come and share your experience or pick up some tips on different aircraft and techniques on this very relaxed, fun, mid-week event. (mumble recommended, typing is slow for comms)

Meet and chat: 19:00 UTC (Mumble GA-Wednesday channel)
Where: LSMA (special permission has been granted)
Wheels up: 19:30 UTC
Comms: Mumble channel 'Special events/GA-Wednesday' for chat and comms
Aircraft: any GA, C182, Turboprop etc from the Flightgear Hangar- Aim for around 120kts 8,500ft max
Insim weather: (Thanks Mariusz) Paste this into manual input: XXXX 121100Z 17010KT 12SM SCT052 FEW300 25/08 Q1022 NOSIG
Insim time: Afternoon

Mostly VFR but I'll have a scout for some Nav-aids and update this post if I think they'll be useful.

Re: Wednesday information November: grey soup

Postby Ysop » Sat Feb 19, 2022 10:31 pm

Dear pilots,

please find below an invitation to this Wednesday's adventures.

Weather has been quite badly recently, so it is time to sharpen our IFR-skills.

This time we are going to fly Düsseldorf-Düsseldorf. Or to use the official wording Düsseldorf(Weeze)(70km from Düsseldorf)/Düsseldorf.
Does this wording make sense? No, but this is the outcome of legal battles of a low-cost carrier trying to market a small regional airport as being part of a much better location.
The passengers falling victim to this will be very happy to be picked up by the friendly Wednesday-group.

For early starters there is a delivery route from Hannover (thanks Eagle!):
https://skyvector.com/?ll=51.43589312324341,6.627119209082815&chart=301&zoom=2&fpl=N0150F100%20EDDV%20HW%20OSB%20HMM%20BOT%20EDLV

0990mmbar=29.24mmHG

Aircraft:
Small GA aircraft. Kindly post in the discussion thread the aircraft you use, so we do not see you as the default yellow glider.

If this is a bit above your skills - fly at anyway!
Choose the difficulty level according to your liking. Extra points for no HUD, no Autopilot.
Please no Autopilot on the ILS. We are real pilots, aren't we?

Radio communication training will be subject to another evening. Concentrate on instrument flying. Good luck!

Re: Wednesday information Oscar: grey rock

Postby TheEagle » Fri Feb 25, 2022 6:05 pm

This weeks session will be a complete contrast to last week's - the only common thing are the colors of the "soup" last week and of the rock we'll get to see this week !
We set out from Pamiers (LFDJ) over flat lands at first, and over a lake to Puivert (LFNW). From there we have a steep climb ahead - 2000 feet in just 4 miles, which means a needed climb rate of 1000 FPM at 100 kts ! So watch out and if needed do a circle AHEAD OF TIME ! We don't want to have to pick anyone of you from a treetop ! ;) We then continue across a river, and another takes us across a lake and to our next stop Montlouis-la-Quillane (LFNQ), which is very difficult to approach because there are trees on a little hilltop at each end of the runway an the runway is rather short - a go-around will send you flying just a few feet above the trees ! Provided we don't crash  we take a little rest, then takeoff again for the last leg of our trip which takes us along deep valleys into slightly lower terrain, to our final stop Andorra-La-Seu-d'Urgell (LESU).

Route & Schedule

Meet and chat: 19:00, wheels up when ready

Estimated flight time: 60 minutes (pauses at the airports included), so if we want we can continue from LESU to already well-known LFIP which would add another 30 to 50 minutes to our flight.

Route (including the extension leg, normal route stops at LESU): https://skyvector.com/?ll=42.7193734614 ... 41E%20LFIP

Scenery

Photoscenery is really recommended for this trip ! Download it with:
Code: Select all
~$ cd fgutils/photoscenery/
~/fgutils/photoscenery$ ./create_bbox.pl --lonLL 0.25 --latLL 42.25 --lonUR 2.25 --latUR 43.25 -- --cols 2 --scenery_folder ~/fgscenery/Orthophotos

which yields about 5GB of PNG files and takes about 3 hours to complete. To greatly increase performance of FG, after that convert the images to DDS with
Code: Select all
~/fgutils/photoscenery$ ./create_dds.sh ~/fgscenery/Orthophotos

which reduces the file size to 1.3 GB and takes another half hour (on my machine). You can then delete the PNG files
Code: Select all
~$ find ~/fgscenery/Orthophotos -name "*.png" -delete

Use at your own risk !

Additionally, do not forget to install my custom LFIP scenery if you plan to do the extension leg because without that you won't have LFIP at all !

Simulator settings

Time: Afternoon
Weather: Warm sector

Finally, don't forget to post your aircraft on the discussion thread so can actually see it ! (except if you use any of the "standard" aircraft (C172, C182, C208, DHC6). My Cessna 210 is not recommended for this session because, ahem, it's not really production-ready at the moment !
You won't believe how many issues dissolved into thin air after reinstalling !

Re: Wednesday information Quebec: low and salty

Postby Ysop » Mon Mar 14, 2022 8:34 pm

This week we will be flying in tourist mode and will explore some new territory.

We'll meet at Beer Sheba airfield (LLBS), make a dash to the dead sea with the chance of a beach landing (There is also an airfield not marked on skyvector). After a visit of Jerusalem we will park our aircraft at Ein Shemer airfield (LLES).

route:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=31.8280770823778,35.38709065212237&chart=301&zoom=4&fpl=%20LLBS%203116N03512E%203115N03525E%203139N03526E%203147N03513E%203214N03520E%20LLES

Usual times, usual aircraft. You know the deal meanwhile. See you on Wednesday!

"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Re: Wednesday information Sierra: Rocky Terrain Mission

Postby TheEagle » Sat Mar 26, 2022 5:16 pm

This week we'll be climbing the Rocky Mountains around KEKS (yes, there is an airport whose ICAO is KEKS, german for cookie  ) - watch out, Terrain Ahead !

We start out at Livingston (KLVM) runway 26 (the shortest of the airport) optionally tracking the 225 FROM radial of the Livingston VOR-DME (116.1 MHz), heading south-west into the mountains. After a big climb over the Mt. Chisholm and a small descent into the following valley we try to land at one of the shortest landing strips in the world - Ousel Falls (MT94), with a runway of just over 900 feet, and a fence on one side and a forest on the other side, so be ready to push the throttle and give the yoke a big pull ! After calming down from the stressful landing we first have to takeoff again without crashing into the forest, or the fence … then climb to the west over the Lone Mountain and descend down to the Ennis Lake, meeting more flat terrain again. There we turn and follow the Madison River to the north. And if that wasn't mad enough yet, our final destination is … Hasskamp (MT42) ! I'd really like to know who thought of such a name for a city …

The last airport does not have any kind of navaids close enough to be of any help - but for those flying an VOR-RNAV equipped aircraft, you can tune in the Bozeman VOR-DME (112.4 MHz), on the RNAV set the bearing to 278° and distance to 17 nm, then on the NAV indicator the RNAV is linked to, set a radial of 180 TO. (disclaimer - not tested)

Route & Schedule

Route: View on SkyVector
Departure: KLVM 19:15 UTC
Arrival: MT42 ~20:45 UTC

Simulator settings

Weather: Real world - seems to be pretty good right now.
Time: Afternoon

Aircraft

Anything that can climb fast and takeoff short - my Cessna 210 (which also has an RNAV) or the C182S are a good mix of both, also DHC6 might be an option. or the Pilatus PC-6. Cessna 208B needs too much runway, and if you take the C172P, well, you'll be far behind I'm afraid …
If you plan to use a different aircraft than those listed here, please post your aircraft on the discussion thread so we can download it, and see you !

Information Tango - Watch out for that fence Reloaded

Postby Volador » Tue Apr 05, 2022 6:26 pm

Holding post for "Watch out for that fence (Reloaded!)" Wednesday 19:00 UTC 6-4-2022

Yes friends, it's time we Tango'd with that fence again. Those of you who are familiar with that event (was it two events? I think this might actually be the third in the area - but no harm in that) will know that you need to watch out for that fence at ENSD where we will finish this trip, either on the runway, in the water at the other end of the runaway or lastly in the fence (if you didn't watch out for the fence). Now I seem to remember Sven? or Hormax? or was it Philip put a DC3 down there last time which has yet to be topped (in my book anyway).

OK, we'll set off West from ENML at a nice steady pace at around 2000ft for ENAL NDB 355. Next head South (ish) and dog-leg West across the hills to ENOV, a very picturesque approach if you have time to admire the view on final. Next is SOuth (ish) and dog-leg East (ish) for the famous fence. The idea is to miss the fence by the way.

Everyone is welcome! (please do aim to use Mumble as it makes comms a lot easier)

Meet and chat about the fence from 19:00 UTC
Wheels up 19:30 prompt
Comms: Mumble GA-Wednesday (in special events on Mumble)
Aircraft: Any GA (General Aviation) but please post your aircraft in the discussion thread https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&p=399955#p399955 ahead of time so we can download and see your propellor properly people! :D ...in the multiplayer.

Re: Wednesday information Vector: Help Mr. Easter Bunny !

Postby TheEagle » Mon Apr 18, 2022 4:34 pm

Did you already hear the Breaking News ? The local Easter Bunny at Jeterswille, Virginia, USA, has caught Corona, now he can't bring the children their Easter eggs ! Imagine how disappointed they'll be ! So, let's do the job - Mr. Easter Bunny has built special pods for us, which are attached to the belly of our aircraft. In there he'll put the eggs in small baskets, which we just need to drop in the right places ! Those eggs do add a little weight - so there's a parachute and detach mechanism on the pods in case we have an emergency. All eggs that are dropped too far away from the right places will be eaten by the fox - so, be careful as to when you drop ! To encourage you, there is a little reward waiting for the one with the fewest losses and the best precision.

The pods are rather small, so there aren't enough egg baskets to supply all targets in one go (even if you didn't waste a single). You can refill your pod at any of the airports below.

Route & Schedule

There's no real route this time - though the targets are arranged in a loose line from Easter Field (87W) over KFVX, VA34 and 05VA to W81.

Meet and chat: 17:45 UTC / 19:45 CET
Start: 18:00 UTC / 20:00 CET
End: 19:00 UTC / 21:00 CET (yes, we have to get the thing done before the sun sets !)

Simulator setup

Time: Afternoon
Weather: Live data

For this session, the target-dropping addon is mandatory - that's what puts the pod, the egg baskets and targets !

Aircraft

The addon needs a configuration file for every aircraft it is to be used with - so far, I've made them for below aircraft, if you want to use a different one please leave a not on the discussion thread at least 2 hours before the session:

  • Cessna P210N
  • Cessna 182S
  • Cessna 172P
  • Alouette-III

You are always invited to use FGFS ;-)

Also you are invited to add such comments in our discussion thread https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=2415, so these information remains clutterfree and we have a build-up of nice trips for other pilots as well.
