Wednesday evening flight briefings

Postby Ysop » Sat May 22, 2021 10:57 am

Dear flying colleagues,

our Wednesday group flight adventures has developed into a regular event with a really nice bunch of people. We'd like to continue this and we are not short of ideas.

The events are mostly centered around general aviation flying, as we like stick and rudder skills more then pressing autopilot buttons.
Usually flights are about one hour with takeoff-time 19:00 UTC. Exceptions for special events of course possible.

Feel free to participate! It is really fun!

As the original thread turned out to be very lively, the need was expressed to keep the information for the upcoming event in one place.
So in this thread there should be only one post per week by the one, who organizes the event. Could be me, but of course anybody else. Usually the one who steps forward with an idea.

So kindly refrain from posting here for general stuff, but use https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025. Thanks! This keeps things organized.

Postby benih » Sat May 22, 2021 11:21 am

Good idea, Ysop, thank you.
Nice to see what developed out of a bunch of public FGCom-mumble Testing flights at the canarians :)
I wanted to add the following bits:

  • everyone is welcome
  • we usually loosely meet half an hour before takeoff time. Afterward done if us stay for funny after action talking
  • meeting time is usually UTC: 1800 summer / 1900 winter (so 2000 local time in tz germany)
  • We usually currently meet on mumble. jitsi (free and opensource) for voice comms and optional screen sharing.
I hereby propose the following static link we can use each wednesday: https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday
  • joining the voice chat is not mandatory, however really consider it because otherwise you miss out at least half of the fun. We don’t bite, don’t be shy, and we also have a broad spectrum of English skills :)
  • We fly casually. That means we don’t use atc radio protocols etc. If you like to use that, it certainly would enrichen our session, but it’s not mandatory.

Postby Ysop » Sun May 23, 2021 8:12 pm

This weekend we'll make it as a fly-in, fly out. The idea is to spend time together and practice ATC skills.

schedule:
18:00-20:00 UTC

aircraft
Use the aircraft of your preference. Please only "realistic" ones. It is a good a idea to state in the discussion thread which one you use, so we see you on multiplayer.

flight rules
We'd like to have a good mix of IFR/VFR operations. It might be a good idea to read a bit about phraseology beforehand.

communication
Jitsi as above for meet and chat. For the official radiocalls we can use mumble. If not possible, do it via jitsi.

Re: Wednesday evening information alpha: EDDH fly in-fly out

Postby benih » Sun May 23, 2021 8:34 pm

I’ll join with the crap140, carried by my blue c182s.

Re mumble/jitsi: we should agree which to use, otherwise we will hear us twice.
If mumble: jsb asked me already if we can do fgcom-mumble testing. We could do that if we all join fgcom.hallinger.org with our clients. It supports both clients: 1.4.0 with plugin, and 1.3 without it. The plugin users just need to enable the „hear all“ feature in the ini file, i can assist on how to set this up via jitsi.

In case you like to do VFR / GA flying, recommended destinations in the area around Hamburg would be
EDHE (gras, 900m), ~10NM away
EDHS (concrete) both around ~17NM
EDHF (gras, concrete, crossed runways), ~25NM
Please refer to https://www.openflightmaps.org/wp-conte ... e&controls where you can also find VFR reporting points (symbol: dark blue triangle in a circle) and the control zone (reddish x-shaped area, ~10NM extended center lines)

=== EDIT ===
You can find a sufficently old VFR map (matching the data in FG) here https://www.tf.uni-kiel.de/~fp/fliegerei/pdf/aip-q.pdf around page 8
===

The nearest airports suitable for airliners would be:
EDHL (Lübeck) 27NM NE of EDDH
EDDW (Bremen) 55NM SW of EDDH
EDDV (Hannover) 71NM S of EDDH

Re: Wednesday evening information bravo: VFR LFCO - LFCB

Postby Volador » Tue Jun 01, 2021 11:02 am

All are welcome and this Wednesday 02-06-2021 will be around 45mins flying VFR trip in the South of France starting at LFCO a small grass strip airfield Aérodrome d'Oloron - Hérrère (If someone is able to pop a hanger there it would be great to liven it up)
We'll fly North for a touch and go at Pau-Pyrenees Airport (FLBP) (time depending we could land, regroup and continue, lets see if we get wheels up on time) before heading ESE to Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées Airport (LFBT) to land and regroup. From LFBT we fly into the mountains over a few villages heading SE finishing (depending on wind direction) a tight, late, left hand final at the grass strip Aero Club de Luchon (LFCB) but you can always go round :)

Times:
18:30 UTC meet and chat jitsi https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday and/or mumble - please do make the effort to join with audio, it makes it much easier to communicate, we are a friendly bunch :)
19:00 UTC wheels up
Set time afternoon, summer, high pressure region

Re: Wednesday evening information charly: Lukla challenge !

Postby TheEagle » Mon Jun 07, 2021 7:37 pm

This Wednesday (09.06.2021) we will be going to the highest mountain of the world : the Mt. Everest. We will start from Lukla, then fly the valleys up north and try a landing at Syangboche (I emphasize : try  !). We take off again after a short rest to continue north until we come to the base camp. We'll land there on a improvised runway, drop some supplies, and have a snack. After that, we'll continue climbing over Mt.Everest and then south, descending back into the valleys. The final landing will then be at Lukla again.

Route: can be found on SkyVector.

Aircraft: GA and helicopters, but please post which aircraft you will be using in the discussion thread so we can all download it. My recommendation is to use the Pilatus PC-6 "Turbo Porter" !

Time and Weather: Set Afternoon, real world weather (or if it's really too bad, Fair weather).

Scenery: D-ECHO created a custom scenery for Nepal - it provides some buildings and aircraft parkings at multiple airports in the region. To see the improvised runway mentioned above, use my Mt. Everest scenery !

Departure: 18:00 UTC
Cessna 210 (Wiki)
My other aircraft: my wiki profile !
Other: FGTools (GitHub)
World tour: View on SkyVector
Please consider donating $1 / €1 to help me finance a new camera !

Re: Wednesday evening information delta: Tatry mountains

Postby benih » Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:41 pm

So let me try to assemble all needed information here.

We will conduct Marius flight: viewtopic.php?p=387676#p387676

Takeoff: 18:00 UTC (=20:00 CEST)
Comms: Standard Jisti link (https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday); we may also use mumble in the last minute when we see everyone can use that.
Planes: Small GA, like C172
Insim weather: First leg (LZTT->LZZI): Marginal-VFR; Second leg: Border High pressure region
Insim time: 1800 local time at LZTT departure (so adjust after connecting by your local real time offset, so it will be 18:00 local when it is 18:00UTC in real time. My FlightGear puts it in the GMT+2 timezone (ie "we germans use real clock time"), but please recheck)

Special rules:

OK, so let me depart from classic skyvector way of presenting things and offer you this (mostly) radio navigation 'puzzle' (shorthand is mine an if it conforms to any standard it is by pure chance):

DEP LZTT
NDB PW 418
VOR PPD 112.10 R275F
CLB 5000ft

@over NDB PW : VOR R273F
visual check: passing over Liptovska Mara (Liptovska Lake)
@DIST 34Mi : VOR R271F

tune NDB ZLA 404
tune ZNA 06 ILS 108.15 R059

@ZLA BRG 90 : HDG360
intercept ZNA ILS
LND LZZI

(have a beer) ;)

DEP LZZI
VOR DME JAB 116.4 R68T
NDB JAB 387
CLB 4000ft

@DIST 1Mi : VOR R150F
CLB 8000ft
@DIST 21Mi: HDG 50

vis check: entering valley
vis check: passing over lakes

HDG 360 + NDB PW BRG 180, EXP DSC 3500ft

LND EPNT

I'll just add, that in my shorthand I used semicolon as a separator

<condition> : <action>

and if there is a plus sign, it is equivalent to AND (so all conditions must be true)

<condition1> + <condition2> : <action>

and bearings are relative to heading, so for example:

@ZLA BRG 90 : HDG360

means: if (condition) ZLA NDB is abeam to my right, then (action) turn to heading 360.

Re: Wednesday evening information delta: Destination Geneva

Postby Volador » Mon Jun 21, 2021 3:15 pm

This Wednesday is "Destination Geneva Adventure". Once again, everyone is welcome to join the trip with about 50 minutes flying plus some challenging stops.

We will depart Sion LSGS on wheels heading South West, there will be two landing challenges, two water and one on a shorter runway LFHM, ...ok three water ladings if you count our final destination the Geneva fountain (or the airport for the faint of heart) for a mocktail or cocktail (your choice).

Meet 18:30UTC chat and briefing (there are aircraft issues so please meet before 19:00UTC TO
Comms https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday or Mumble
Aircraft advised: Cessna Caravan or amphibious that can fly at around 120kts you need both floats and gear options

Route here:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=46.027386497445235,6.909370434062046&chart=301&zoom=1&fpl=N0140A050%20LSGS%204607N00705E%204607N00701E%204603N00657E%204605N00655E%204603N00656E%204559N00655E%204554N00649E%204556N00645E%204552N00637E%20LFHM%204551N00636E%204549N00631E%204545N00628E%204546N00622E%204545N00615E%204551N00610E%204604N00603E%204613N00610E

Issues with Cessna Caravan - It might just be my system and/or lack of skills but; I've not managed to activate the floats and gear configuration while on land, the gear submerges into the runway. I've not managed to land on hard surface with floats+gear configured either. The suggestion for this aircraft is to start with gear then after take-off change the configuration via the menu mid-air for our combination of runway and water landings on route, a little irregular but it works [edit] no, it doesn't - the aircraft makes a splash noise on a solid runway with amphibious + gear down and face-plants

Re: Wednesday evening information Golf: Crete II

Postby benih » Mon Jun 28, 2021 1:20 pm

We will conduct the second part of a flight around crete.

Route: https://skyvector.com/?ll=35.1349591680 ... 26E%20LGIR
Takeoff at LGTL, while climbing to 3000ft MSL fly south near the coast (there should be a prominent valley) and turn eastwards to fly around the mountain corner. Follow the Montain chain until intercepting Radial 80 TO VOR SITIA (113.30); follow 32nm until overfly of the VOR. There, follow Radial FROM 350 until East of airfield LGST, which we will then overfly westwards. From there we will follow the coast but short cut the gulf. There we will aim for a nortwest course to fly between the Mountains SW and the hills NE until we reach the coast, then turning west to land at LGIR (NDB HER 431 will aid us.)

  • Airspeed: We aim for about 120-130 knots
  • Flight level: We aim for about 3000ft MSL (so set your QNH setting)
  • Initial navaids: Tune NDB HER (431) and NAV to VOR SITIA (113.30 @ 80).

Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST)
Comms:
Planes: Small GA, like C172 or C182
Insim weather: Live weather
Insim time: Dawn

Special notes:
  • As per information Foxtrott:

    • please start with the launcher option `--httpd=8080`. This will start a small local webserver on http://localhost:8080, serving a map where you can quickly reposition your plane at startup.
    • Check the mpmap for already connected pilots. Startup offline on the only parking lot. then use the web map to go somewhere else (shift left). Then connect to multiplayer.
    • Crete in Terrasync is not so nice to view at. Try the custom scenery: https://github.com/JMaverick16/Crete
    • You will greatly enhance your joy when trying this with photoscenery:
      • try https://wiki.flightgear.org/Julia_photo ... _generator or https://github.com/nathanielwarner/flig ... otoscenery
      • Needed boxes are (the following linux command examples are for the more generic create_bbox.pl script from nathaniels original photoscenery project)
        Code: Select all
        #left half of crete
        ./create_bbox.pl --latLL 35.221 --lonLL 23.612 --latUR 35.619 --lonUR 24.788 -- --cols 4 --scenery_folder /usr/share/games/flightgear/OrtoPhoto/

        #right half of crete
        ./create_bbox.pl --latll 34.897795849711294 --lonll 24.664990705092286 --latur 35.4948161617643 --lonur 26.384351022105808 -- --cols 4 --scenery_folder /usr/share/games/flightgear/OrtoPhoto/

Please tell us your plane, so we can download.
Be sure to grab the latest c182s from github (or FGAddon trunk hangar) so you won't see me black again :)

Scottish Highlands and islands part 1

Postby Volador » Thu Jul 08, 2021 5:23 pm

Here's the VFR route for next Wednesday. Everyone is welcome to join the trip.

We will depart Tiree heading North East at the crack of dawn, bring a jumper (and midge repellent for later). Turning inland we will fly East and navigate Loch Sunart turning South at Loch Linnhe towards Oban landing at EGEO which can be tricky. After a head count and any necessary apologies to the coastguard, including explaining what 'das ist nicht gut' means, we'll take off heading West to the Isle of Mull passing Duart Castle...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duart_Castle#/media/File:Duart-Castle.jpg

...and the final destination will be Glenforsa EG45 which is another challenge, a private grass strip owned by a Hotel (information Hotel - it's almost as if I'd planned this...). Once you've handed in your keys you may be allowed a wee dram or bottle of irn-brw. If you want to up the stakes at EG45 then approach from the South and dive after the pylons (not convinced they're that tall IRL though).

https://skyvector.com/?ll=56.473237487345266,-6.193542469596924&chart=301&zoom=4&fpl=A020%20EGPU%205640N00627W%205640N00558W%205640N00551W%205642N00545W%205641N00539W%205641N00529W%205641N00521W%205633N00527W%205629N00524W%20EGEO%205628N00536W%205632N00551W%205631N00555W

Airspeed: Aim for 110-120 knots
Flight level: Around 1500ft MSL (so set your QNH setting)

Meet and chat from 18:00 UTC
Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST) (=19:30GMT BST)

Comms:
Primary: Mumble, preferred with fgcom-mumble plugin. Ask in the discussion thread https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=660 but we can easily use regular Mumble if there are problems.

Secondary: Standard Jisti link (https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday)
Aircraft: Small GA, C172 or C182 etc that can cruise at around 110-120kts
Insim weather: Border of high pressure
Insim time: Dawn

Special notes:
As per information Golf:

To avoid collisions: Before joining multiplayer please start with the launcher option `--httpd=8080`. This will start a small local webserver on http://localhost:8080. In Flightgear select the menu Equipment/Map(opens in browser). Your browser should open a map and on the layers icon (top right of the map) check the box to see other traffic. Use this web map to avoid other aircraft (drag your green aircraft icon), then back in Flightgear connect to multiplayer :)

You will greatly enhance the experience when trying this with photoscenery from FGUK

Wednesday evening information Indigo: Scotland vaccine dash

Postby Volador » Tue Jul 20, 2021 5:37 pm

Scotland part 2, The vaccine dash. All are welcome.

40 minutes flying plus all the stops you should allow 1 hr 30 mins.
OK, the scenario is that we have to deliver post and parcels to six destinations that are fairly close to each other ...let's say vaccines to make it current ;)

We will depart Lossiemouth EGQS (Military base) and arrive shortly afterwards at Kinloss EGQK (Military) before powering over to Dornoch Firth to a grass airstrip just off the beach at Dornoch (EG31 on the flightgear map) (GPS ref only as this is not in Skyvector's database). After dropping off more supplies of the vaccine we fly back across Dornoch Firth but then stop off at Fearn, another hard to find grass airstrip not in skyvector (EG73 on the flightgear map) (the local village Balintor needs vaccines!), No time to stop, we head South to Inverness (EGPE) to pick up a fresh stock of vaccines just in from Oxford. We then make the final leg back North East to Lossimouth EGQS passing Kinloss on the way.

Here is the route:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=57.7102611917 ... 18W%20EGQS

Airspeed: Aim for 130-140 knots
Flight level: Around 1500ft MSL (so set your QNH setting at EGQS)

Meet and chat from 18:00 UTC
Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST) (=19:30GMT BST)

Comms:
Primary: Mumble, preferred
Secondary: Standard Jisti link https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday - let us know in multiplayer chat if you want to use jitsi.
Aircraft: Twin engine or turbo prop ...or both. Aim for 120-130 Kts
Insim weather: Border of a low pressure region
Insim time: Afternoon

Suggested route for Scotland part 3 :

EGPE - overfly Lock Ness - short field landing Plockton ( EG81 ) - again short field Isle of Skye ( EG57 ) - Final destination EGPR ( Barra ) [ The airport is unique, believed to be the only one in the world where scheduled flights use a tidal beach as the runway. ]

Wednesday evening information Lima : North of Spain - part 1

Postby Volador » Tue Aug 03, 2021 2:06 pm

El norte de españa - parte uno

All are welcome to join this leisurely trip in some of the smaller mountains in the North of Spain starting and finishing at Bilbao LEBB with one stop at Santander (just one stop-off this time which is very restrained for me :D - but this was planned short notice).

Skyvector Route here: https://skyvector.com/?ll=43.12196931796023,-3.8673705944500916&chart=301&zoom=4&fpl=N0130A040%20LEBB%204309N00311W%204310N00317W%204306N00327W%204312N00326W%204316N00328W%204317N00341W%20SA%20LEXJ%204325N00326W%20LEBB

18:00 UTC meet and chat
18:30 wheels up (prompt)
Flying time around 1 hr including the Santander stop

Insim weather: Live weather
Insim time: Dawn

Comms: Standard Mumble and we will create a GA Wednesday channel
Comms option: Jitsi - let us know in the multiplayer chat if you wish to use this.
The in-sim chat is limited, do try for mumble if possible. There's also an android app for mumble which then won't hog your system resources.

Aircraft: Any General Aviation but must be able to cruise at 130-140kts
Highest altitude point around 4000ft 3000ft crossing a ridge about half way but mostly around 1500-2000ft to enjoy the view. This is a very rich green part of Spain unlike the South which is much more dry - max out those trees settings if your system can take it :)

Photoscenery download code provided by @The Eagle, any questions please ask on the discussion https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=840thread :
Code: Select all
./create_bbox.pl --latLL 43.65 --lonLL -4 --latUR 44 --lonUR -2.5 -- --scenery_folder ../fgscenery/Photoscenery/Spain --theight 2048

Let everyone know in the Wednesday evening discussion thread https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=840which aircraft you plan to fly so that we can download ahead of time and see you in the sim rather than a big yellow glider :)
