Wednesday information X-ray "By 'eck! Etna!" 4th May 2022

Postby Volador » Mon May 02, 2022 4:28 pm

By 'eck! Etna! (by heck, Etna!) Event on 4th May 2022 LIBJ 18:00 UTC

Sicily beckons with a sight seeing tour of Mt Etna and local areas. Note: LIBJ is not listed in skyvector (but is listed in Flightgear) so LICA is indicated as the skyvector starting point. The second GPS coordinate on the Skyvesctor route is roughly where LIBJ is located.

We depart LIBJ grass strip onto a heading of 215 @2000ft until we encounter the coast which we then follow South West with the coast to our left to enjoy the views of the container terminal at Gioia Tauro and shortly afterwards, the steep and impressive coastline.
We'll turn South to keep following the coastline before our first stop landing at Reggio Calibrea LICR where there is a choice of two runways.

Tune NDB to 325 and backup to 407
Depart LICR altitude 2000 and follow the NDB 325
When the NDB swings behind you, turn onto heading 255 out over the water.
Sicily should loom into view after a few minutes, keep the heading and once near the coast, turn left and follow the coast, enjoying the view on the right for a few minutes down to Naxos. Once over the harbour, turn sharp Right Hdg 305 and follow the valley and start a climb 11,500.
Unless visibility is bad Mt Etna should now be visible to our left.
Tune to NDB 345 and when the needle reads 90 degrees to your left, turn left Hdg 180
We'll need about 11,500 ft to see Mt Etna below but even from a close shave of the volcano at 10,000 we'll get a view of the plumes. (Don't forget to turn on volcano activity in the Environment menu).
If you're very daring there are points on offer for landing and baking a potato but it's not recommended.
After a look around at Mt Etna take a heading of around 140 (South East) to the coast.
Once at the coast tune to NDB 407 and follow the needle (South) to LICC where our journey finishes.

Re: Wednesday information Yankee: Berlin Airlift

Following the discussion on this thread (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=40310), I would like to propose this route:

A Berlin-Airlift style flight from Rhein-Main Airbase to Berlin Tempelhof in the good old dc-3/c-47(https://wiki.flightgear.org/Douglas_C-47_Skytrain).

route to Berlin:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=52.0119787950 ... 24E%20EDDB
(ignore the last waypoint as it it only necesary because Tempelhof isn't an airport anymore)

Information for the approach: https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthre ... eries-2018!

naviad positions are: EDDF -> CHA -> FUL -> MAG -> TF -> landing pattern

between FUL and TF the simulation speed should be increased (a/A) to 4x.

route back to Frankfurt:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=50.0956639438 ... 45E%20EDDF

naviad positions are: EDDI -> WZ -> OV -> FTZ -> SD -> OFN -> EDDF

between WZ and SD the simulation speed should again be increased (a/A) to 4x.

this information relates to the historic NDBs made by D-Echo: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=60#p385070

The aircraft used is the default hangar c-47 (https://wiki.flightgear.org/Douglas_C-47_Skytrain) which should be loaded with about 7500lbs of supplies.
It is a bit tricky in terms of ground handling, so use , and . for independent left/right wheel brakes and L (or the according lever in the cockpit) for the tail wheel lock.

initial parking positions are the G and H positions south of the main runways.

departure is planned from runway 07R/25L.
cruise at 5000ft, 160kts.
approach at 110kts followed by a landing planned on 27R

At Berlin there is no time for any tourist attractions. Get of the runway and to the parking positions quickly. Shut down both engines and let the airport workers unload your aircraft and refill it with anything that has to be flown out.
Taxi to the runway (wait there for the others if necessary) and take of again heading back for the Airbase.

both routes are around 50-60 minutes so it will probably take a bit more than 2 hours.

Departure is planned at around 17:45 UTC

communication

Mumble, radio-mumble.flightgear.fr 'Special events/GA-Wednesday' or Flightgear Chat but Mumble is recommended

Note:
There are three air corridors (20nm wide), two heading for and one coming from Berlin. The route above uses the south and middle corridors. Leaving this airspace could result in being shot down by soviet/east-German interceptors. An emergency landing would also result in a diplomatic catastrophy.
In addition to that, in the tight organization of the airlift, there was no time for a second landing attempt and pilots would have to fly back home after a go-around.

Thanks to YSOP, D-Echo and TheEagle for the Information and the navaid addon.

Re: Wednesday information Alpha: Mauna Kea and Kilauea ashes

Postby TheEagle » Fri May 20, 2022 5:43 pm

This week we'll explore Hawaii an enjoy the nice blue seas - ALS and Water "High" settings are a must ! :) We set out from Hana Airport (PHHN) to the south-south-east, tracking the 153 TO radial of the UPP VORTAC (112.3 MHz). After reaching the Mauna island, we turn a bit left to the south-west and descend to Waimea-Kohala (PHMU) - on the approach the MUE VOR-DME (113.3 MHz) radial 225 TO can help. After a short pause we continue with a steep climb to the south-east to 14000 ft and visit Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, turning south after the former until the small city Humuula and then south-south-west to avoid a restricted area. When we have passed Mauna Loa we turn west to the Kilauea and begin our descent. After passing the Kilauea volcano (watch out for ashes which could ruin your engine !) turn north-east and land at the Mountain View Airstrip (HI23). The runway isn't that short (about 1800 ft) but it very narrow, at least in FG - go-arounds granted !

Route & Schedule
Meet and chat 18:00 UTC / 20:00 CET, takeoff when ready.
Arrival at HI23: Expected at ~ 19:30 UTC / 21:30 CET
Route: ·View on SkyVector

Simulator settings

Weather: Real world
Time: Clock time (will be roughly 8 am in Hawaii when we takeoff)
Don't forget to turn volcanic activity for Kilauea on !

As always, if you use a "non-standard" aircraft (C172P, C182, C210, DHC6, DC-3, C208B) please drop a note on the discussion thread in advance so we can download and see your bird ! :)

As someone who was born in Honolulu, I don't know how I couldn't join you for this one! I could only do the Waimea sector since I have something at 19:00, but I plan on being there. Would you like that I fly or provide control/flight info service?
My passengers receive hazard pay... but at least I have fun.

Cheers,

This Wednesday we are going to let the world spinning. Or better our visual impression of it.

You are going to climb into you CAP 10B to give the crowd a magnificient aerobatic show.

We are going to meet at Cannes Mandelieu. The runway parallel to the coast is going to be ours.
Over this runway and to the South of it there is the box to give your aircraft a workout.

Recommended sportsman programme:

enter runway 23 in a fast low approach
end of runway Immelmann
three rolls
Split-S
low over runway, loop in the middle
Hammerhead
half-roll to get inverted
flying low inverted over runway
half-roll for upright again
Cuban eight
after that: pull up and celebrate with as many rolls and loops as you like.

Of course instructions can be given via Mumble during this sequence.

We'll comment, hold our breath, applause, encourage, but do not care about points and rankings.

The pilots can enjoy the show from the side of the runway or alternatively use the training area, which will be a bit out at sea.

Excuse my confusion. I was under the impression that Nice/Cote d'Azur was our planned airport? Is the Cannes airport the same one?

Re: Wednesday evening information Delta: Lukla II

Postby TheEagle » Wed Jun 15, 2022 4:15 pm

This week we're back in the Himalayan, and back to Lukla, Syangboche and the Mt. Everest base camp ! We start at VNPL Phaplu, then head north stopping at Lukla and Syangboche to drop tourists and pick up supplies for the base camp. At the base camp we drop off our supplies to make the aircraft lighter for the sightseeing climb to Mt. Everest, then descend back down heading south for the last leg to VNRT Rumjatar.

Route: can be found on SkyVector.

Aircraft: GA and helicopters, but please post which aircraft you will be using in the discussion thread so we can all download it. My recommendation is to use the Pilatus PC-6 "Turbo Porter" !

Time and Weather: Set Afternoon, real world weather (or if it's really too bad, Fair weather).

Scenery: D-ECHO created a custom scenery for Nepal - it provides some buildings and aircraft parkings at multiple airports in the region. To see the improvised runway mentioned above, use my Mt. Everest scenery !

EGCB Manchester-Barton to IoM flight is still on for next Wednesday Route is EGCB Manchester-Barton > RAFCark EG15 > EU JURBY starting at the usual time, 18:00 UTC

. Starting at Manchester-Barton, EGCB, with a stopover at RAF Cark EG15 and finally to Isle of Man to land at Jurby RAF, the airfield at Jurby is in the terrain, but not listed in Airports so you have go find it on the NW corner of the Island with your Mk 1 eyeballs.

The beauty of this flight is all the airfields involved have big open green spaces and you can land or take off in any direction you wish. It's short at a little over 113 nautical miles and yet really diverse scenery.

Classic aircraft this time keeping with the history of the airfields we stop at. I have an old, unreleased airplane. The General Aircraft Limited Cygnet II. It's JSB sim flight model, has gentle GA performance envelope similar to a Piper TriPacer. It's an old WWIi era home front liaison/courier twoseater. (I have a link in the other thread...). And it's tricycle gear with flaps so it has limited STOL capability. If someone could post up a Sky Vector of the route it would be great.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/bjv90l2h ... I.zip/file

Weather could be Real but I' d like to suggest the Retreating Cold front scenario with a doctoring for variable winds at ground and an average of 17 knots from 305 degrees. Yeah a head wind in a slow plane. You'll be fine, it's not that strong a wind.

This week is going to be a bit different:

Image

Travel to LFTH, climb into any receiver aircraft described here: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Multiplayer_aerial_refueling and meet your Texaco for air-to-air refuelling practise.

Both boom and drogues will be available to your thirsty aircraft and presumable enough fuel on board to feed you all. In our virtual sky we take the freedom to forget about carbon footprint.

Tanker route:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=43.2643335653097,6.74770287035329&chart=301&zoom=5&fpl=N0280%20LFMN%20LFMN%20TLN%204251N00609E%204252N00722E%204302N00722E%204302N00611E%204252N00611E%204253N00720E%204301N00720E%204301N00612E%204253N00612E%204253N00719E%204301N00719E%204301N00613E%204254N00612E%204254N00718E%204300N00718E%204300N00614E%204255N00613E%204255N00717E%204259N00717E%204259N00614E%204256N00614E%204255N00650E%20LFMN

Texaco will be at FL120 280kts.

Deliberately the route has been set up south of Toulon, so we have the aircraft carrier around for additional fun.

Usual times, usual communication channels.
