It is understandable for you to be nervous, but you don’t have to be. I agree with the many pilots in this thread who've said FlightGear is a much more relaxed experience and is a great platform to learn. That being said, if you still don’t feel at ease with the radios what I suggest is for you to tune into https://www.liveatc.net, or even better, sit in one of the various mumble channels as an OBS (observer) where ATCs are hosting events and listen to their interactions with the pilots in their airspace.

You can figure out what airspace is controlled via the two following links:
http://flightgear-atc.alwaysdata.net
http://mpmap02.flightgear.org/v3/
The first link is the FlightGear ATC event and flight planning website. The second is the multiplayer map at the bottom of which you will find a list of all pilots/ATCs that are online (on servers 01 and 03). To find ATCs faster than by just scrolling through the list, click on the funnel at the top right of the list box and type in either "OpenRadar" or "ATC-pie" in the box next to "in the aircraft model". I hope I was able to answer your questions.

Jon

There you see where ATC's are actually open for businesses and what pilots are actually controlled by them right then!

There are some really good tips on Vatsim found here https://www.vatsim.net/pilots
keep in mind though that some instructions only apply to Vatsim but the basics are the same for any Sim or real life flying.
I wished I would have read this before I started flying!

I think that Jon is right here.
The main point is that FG is much more relaxed than vatsim, so if someone just wants to make a quick flight without much "paper work" or if someone still thinks he is not experienced enough, that's the place for him (considering the fact that the FSX multiplayer is just a waste of time).

I also prefer many times to make a FG flight rather than a vatsim one when I have less time, or just want less chatter on frequency. I really find some of the models and sceneries great, and worthy to use even instead of FSX.

Most important, I think that the ATCs in FG are much more tolerant to mistakes and to new people, and much more willing to help and teach a thing or two, rather than the non-tolerant ATCs in vatsim (and yes, I am ATCing there as well, it's hard to be tolerant when there is much traffic, and on FG I always find time to help a new pilot with tips).

Of course, since it's a free sim, I found that sometimes you can get some annoying people who just want to bother (I guess jomo knows best with these kinds of people, I just have them once in a while :D ) and recently I saw some new ATCs that seems not really to know what they are doing (and I will open a new thread about that, since I did offer all of them some help as well).
