FGUK Flightnight - June 8th - The Virtual D-Day Squadron

Postby geed » Thu Jun 06, 2019 2:26 pm

Welcome gentlemen to our virtual D-Day memorial flight!

On the 5th of june 2019 a group of C-47 planes will take on a flight from mainland UK over the channel towards the original drop zones over France. They will release parajumpers in original equipment as a tribute to all heroes who fought against the Germans.

We will do the same on saturday the 8th of june!

We will not only use C-47s but also gliders that can be attached to them. So everyone is very welcome to join us on our virtual memorial flight that evening.

The only allowed plane is the C-47

Timeplan

We will assemble at 8pm UK time but please be there at least half an hour earlier if you need to test things. We need to start in time.

T/O EGMC > N50°44.92' E0°14.81' @1500ft > -- over the channel @ 500ft -- > LFOH @1500ft due to Flak > N49°16.53' W0°12.00' @ 600ft for the drop over Merville > RTB LFRK

ALTITUDE changes are being called out by flight lead.
DROP initiation is being called out by flight lead.

There won't be a break due to sparse airport density on the island and a long flight over the channel so be prepared, gather all rations and enough beer.

Time Setting - Morning
Weather Setting - Border of a Low Pressure Region

Here is a broadcast of the CBS about the confirmation of the invasion.

Here is a video of a channel, containing the full radio broadcast during the invasion - all in all this is about 10 hours of video material (audio actually):

I have created a patch to the DC-3 to enable glider towing here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lstjm1lpn08o7 ... .diff?dl=0

And a small fix to the Airspeed-Horsa (Helijahs one) to reenable MP towing here:

I'll do another for Detlef Fabers Horsa in a bit

A small sound update for everyone who likes to hear a better cockpit sound of the engines in low and high rpm.

Are there supposed to be actual piloted tow planes for the gliders, or have you set up an AI script to cross the channel and tow those who wish to pilot a glider?

I haven't setup an AI script, just enabled MP towing on the DC-3 & Helijahs Airspeed Horsa (The AI tow on the Horsa doesn't work as far as I can tell)

It's just there if people want to try it - I've done MP testing on the DC-3 & Airspeed Horsa & it works, but it's tricky

The other week I came across my old Air Training Corps (ATC) papers. At the age of 16 the ATC sent me to RAF Swanton Morley, which was one of their glider training schools, and I went solo at the end of the week. in a Slingsby Cadet flying brick.
Digging into these papers, I find that my instructor was a former army glider pilot. Most likely he piloted a Horsa on one-way trips to battles including Normandy and Arnhem.
For him and his fellow glider pilots this would have been the real thing, and no computer game.
I can not imagine what it could have been like, being cast off at dawn over unknown enemy territory in command of such an aircraft with the added responsibility of his passengers.
I need say no more.

I created an AI C-47 from the C-47 that came with the Airspeed Horsa. Gear are animated. Three AI scripts, one taking off out of EGMC, one starting in flight over the English Channel near the French Coast at LFOH and
one starting over the drop zone at Merville.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/pn5z82ahq0cxs ... ar.gz?dl=0

I also patched the Airspeed-Horsa per the instructions above. I had to change the key and method to hook to the AI aircraft. It required Ctrl+o.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9getrl5pwo66 ... ar.gz?dl=0

I found out you can't push the Horsa much past 130kts or it breaks. So the DC3 is set to a max speed of 120 which puts you on the edge of failure the entire trip. In fact

Don't forget the Horsa starts with the brake on shift+b to release the parking brake. ctrl+o to hookup to C-47. Don't push it, stay smooth or it will break.

Thanks wlbragg, I tried it and it was quite fun. I don't think the weather is really suitable right now - winds of 22 knots. Should be interesting tomorrow :P

As we only have about a 2 hhr slot for the Flight, Towing the Glider would probably put us way over our allotted time for this.

We will not only use C-47s but also gliders that can be attached to them.

Does the Horsa also break when towed behind a MP aircraft? If so then the 120kt limit may not work to allow towing all the way from EGMC to Merville in any fashion, unless they start way earlier then the rest of the event.

They must have went in two groups on D-Day, paratroopers and tow planes?
