The Festival of FlightGear, November '17

Postby elgaton » Thu Dec 15, 2016 11:05 pm

This is the thread to discuss everything related to the Fall 2017 edition of the Festival of FlightGear.

Fall 2017 edition: November 4th and 5th, 2017
Time: All weekend Sat 00:00-Sun 23:59 UTC
Location: Italy

---
The Festival of FlightGear is a biannual "fly-in" event taking place in Spring and Fall:
  • the Spring edition is held in March in a region outside Europe;
  • the Fall edition is held in Europe and coincides with the FSWeekend "real world event" at Lelystad.

This first post will be the only one containing up-to-date information about the Festival and will be updated to provide you with links to the latest airport charts/ground networks/Route Manager files/helpful resources for the Fall 2017 edition only.
---
Festival repository
I'm going to create a repository to store OpenRadar files/ground networks/Route Manager files just after the Spring 2017 edition ends; the link will be posted here.
---
Flight/ATC planning:
Pilots and controllers are invited to register their flight plans/sessions at Lenny's website.
---
Charts:
We will use the official AIP Italy charts; you can get them from the Eurocontrol EAD Basic Web site (requires a free registration) or from the ENAV AIP Italy Web site (requires a free registration: the form is only available in Italian).

The first alternative is recommended as you can access all European AIPs with a single set of credentials.
---
ATCs:
Note that this list is subject to changes.
  • LIRR_CTR (Roma Radar) - Oscar
  • LFKJ (Ajaccio) - D-ECHO (technically, outside the Festival area)
  • LIPA (Aviano Air Base) - J Maverick 16

I am controlling LIMC approach, tower, ground, delivery, and the LIMM center sector above it.

Things I noticed from last festival:
*I will use ATC-pie, and transponders with mode C (altitude) are required, or I can't see you!
*Please do not spawn on any runway

For anyone willing to study the Italian FIRs, you can go to the Web site of the Italian VATSIM division and open the links in the section "Italian Airspace".

An important note: the semicircular rule (aircraft flying with a track between 0° and 179° must be at an odd flight level, aircraft flying with a track between 180° and 359° must be at an even flight level) is different in Italy, because the main flight routes are north/southbound! Therefore:
  • aircraft having a track between 270° and 089° (northbound) must fly at an even level;
  • aircraft having a track between 90° and 269° (southbound) must fly at an odd level.
-----
Crossposting and summarizing (as usual):
  • since some approach maneuvers for LIPX require tight turns, I will control Verona Radar as well as LIPX;
  • IAHM-COL will also control Padova Center;
  • ATC411 will be controlling LIMM radar, and LIMC approach;
  • it would be nice to have a few airports in Central/Southern Italy controlled, in order to appease pilots wishing to perform longer flights.

The Festival is (slowly) approaching!

To give fellow simmers more chances to perform long flights, some of use moved to Southern Italy. I have updated the list of ATC positions in the first post.

The Festival has begun!

LIMJ (Genova Cristoforo Colombo) briefing
The normal runway in use is 28, except for the cases where the tailwind is over 10 kts (for arrivals)/7 kts (for departures).

Should runway 10 be in use, a circle to land procedure will be in effect:
  • At 1360 ft and 1 NM from the threshold of runway 28, turn left by 45 degrees.
  • Maintain the heading for 20 s, then turn right 284 and descend to 1000 ft.
  • When you reach the threshold of runway 10, descend to 700 ft and, after 20 seconds, make a 180° turn, descend at 200 ft/min and report on final.

LIPX (Verona Villafranca) briefing

In the last six months, some procedures were changed, especially for the arrivals from the North. Therefore, make sure to use the latest AIP Italy charts when planning your flight.

For arrivals, the entry points are:
  • from the North: NEVNI or IDREK (alas, the scenic and challenging ELTAR1A STAR is not in use anymore);
  • from the East: OSTEG;
  • from the South: PAR or BOA;
  • from the West: TZO or SRN.

Please make sure to:
  • use the published procedures (or to request vectoring on initial contact), and fly at the prescribed altitudes;
  • state your callsign everytime;
  • start at a parking position (if you are flying from LIPX).
Doing so will greatly speed things up (especially if there is a good amount of traffic).

Scenery: due to time constraints I haven't been fully able to model it, however, this night I did a new 2D build and I am adding some pre-existing 3D models, as well as ground signs, as I type. This build will also contain all the missing fixes (if you happen to use a recent build of FlightGear, they will appear in the map). I'll post a link in the afternoon.
If you are not able to download it, make sure to use at least the December 12th, 2016 release.

OpenRadar procedures: they are already available from the upstream OpenRadar routes project.

See you this evening!
