Sorry from me -- and thanks to all you guys that even missed me!

That PC-crash of my most beloved biggy was worse than I imagined first.
I had to buy a new PC and am now trying to set it up with all the features we used before!
By now I hope to be available again starting Wednesday at EDDF.

Thx for caring

Re: EDDF-Triangle PC-Problems

Postby jomo » Fri May 07, 2021 7:07 pm

Ouch, the new PC was really costly on my nerves!!!!

After having a new PC with "Ubuntu 20.04" I decided to upgrade all my equipment from18.04 up to that dam 20.04!!!!
---- AND THEN noticed that I have big Problems with sound - i.e. I could not discuss with others or hear music etc.

That means this new release does not include some Microsoft-Licences - especially sound - related.
That became really bad during our Wednesday-session. And while updating all my old equipment and added some cleanUp - I ran into even more problems. So I decided to cancel our upcoming Friday + Saturday + Sunday session to clean up my whole mess - and hope to see you all again on Friday next week.

And in case you are on LINUX/UBUNTU watch when you upgrade to ver. 20.04: The sound (for most applications) will not work any more -- there are lots of reports of that in the Internet! --- see e.g. : https://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/

i haven't had any problems like that with my kubuntu 20.04 installs... they've all been fresh installs on raw systems, though... not upgrades to existing systems...

the only thing that bugs me on my main 20.04 system where i stream from is that my audio routing gets rerouted when i plug/unplug my headphones... that just means i have to reboot or fix the audio routing manually but i really don't like either of those options... i just need to find the program that is rerouting everything and stop or reconfigure it... i set my audio routing up in my pulseaudio config... that was easier for me than dancing with JACK and similar audio routing tools but they may also prevent this rerouting from happening like it does for me... one day i'll get tired enough of it happening and i'll break out the scalpel and start cutting at things ;)

again: Sorry
I worked several hours over several days now - and got it running - but just now sound is gone again! No idea what that is now: Did I do something bad or too good - or maybe a VIRUS ??? -- I will rebuild the BIGGY next week from scratch and see!
Hope to be operational next weekend ! Sorry

If you are using PulseAudio you set a default sound device for output and one for input.
Most applications dont have a setting for the device and use the default that is set in PulseAudio.
If you want another output (or input) for one application, you can close it and reset the defaults in PulseAudio and start the app again.
This is complicated but it works if you need it only some time.
If you need it more often, install 'pavucontrol'. This gives you another GUI program under Multimedia.
With it you can see the actual sound routing of every application for input and output and you can also set the sound routing on the fly.
I use it to route the sound to the speaker (streaming, FG, games, etc...) or to the headphones (Pidgin, Jitsi, Mumble, etc...).

Maybe this helps also Jomo to sort out some sound troubles.

Postby wkitty42 » Tue May 18, 2021 3:44 pm

thanks, woodstokk... i've been through all of that... there is something else in the system that is adjusting things...
i do have the defaults set as desired and have also turned OFF the options
Code: Select all
( ) add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards
( ) automatically switch all running streams when new output becomes available

so i don't know what is not respecting these settings... the first one is respected... the second one is not...
i'll be either digging in further with the KDE/ubuntu folks or switching to JACK or similar... for now, i just live with it...

anyway, enough of this off topic in here... sorry for the noise, jomo...

Can we expect an EDDF controller Tomorrow? I'm hoping so!
My passengers receive hazard pay... but at least I have fun.
