Thanks for the replies. So we have minimum 6.5 participants. Let's go for it!

We'll stay at lovely Grenchen? Or any other place Marcus would prefer?

For next week we might also train there, so everyone can fly traffic patterns blindly and we can concentrate on the 28th better.
Would skip the 29th then, as two evenings of flying might interfere with other plans for most of us.

Marcus is now based at EGNX East Midlands (UK) so that would be no homework for him but said we can request a different airport. IFR or VFR - I think with less experienced folks in the group it will be quite tricky so we need to be clear at the start weather it's a straight forward event or a learning session - just so we give each other the space on the comms to be instructed/ask questions because things will go wrong. If it is information overload for anyone still getting to grips with flying they should definitely still participate but be safe in the knowledge that it really doesn't matter, there is no pressure to get it right. Marcus is happy to accommodate all skill levels, it should be fun so treat it as such :)

I would welcome a refresher on Towered VFR. But surely Marcus can handle also IFR when mixed in?

Grenchen sounds good, but does not have ILS, but EGNX does (and two NDBs as well as at northwest a funny VOR named "TNT" sending on 115.7).
If everyone is happy, EGNX would probably be the Marcus-friendlier option since Marcus workload will be high, and for us we can still do a standard pattern.

I found recent charts here: https://airwaymap.com/airport/EGNX/charts (including a VRP chart)
The VORs and NDBs frequencies are matching.

What I miss (please enlighten me):
  • on the VRP chart reporting points like "November" or "Sierra". No clue where we are allowed to enter/exit etc
  • No map showing the pattern. I assume that "missing" means "standards": ie.
    - 1000 AGL (1300ft in this case) altitude
    - left-handed patterns on the runway in use
    - leg distance determined by the 45° rule (departure=1/2 mile, turn to downwind is at 45° to respective threshold)

We are happy, that Marcus supports us, so taking to EGNX is good.

Mixing VFR-IFR was fine the last ATC-training as well. Remember that IFR is dead-easy for communications, except writing down IFR clearances.

In this light we should just meet for practice at EGNX next week, so we are familiar.

Attention newcomers: DON'T be afraid for such an event.
It is all a learning environment for us and we can incorporate all skill levels.
We'll post some long and short reading materials from the last events.

Just observed a flight from East Midlands Flying School. It's a right hand pattern for runway 27.

EGNX seems to be a little heavy on scenery (or it's my old pc) be advised you may want to check your scenery settings before Wednesday to turn off some features

I've done a few RH patterns at EGNX over the weekend. I don't think my pc is particularly powerful, but it seemed to handle it well (when it wasn't doing updates).
My patterns were passing near some cooling towers which had mist rising from them nicely.
14-16kts head and sidewind over the weekend with real weather, so the landings were interesting!

This event is sounding quite interesting!
That being said, my time and resources this week are at a real minimum. I definitely want to attend, but I'm wondering if I would like to " ride with someone" or perhaps simply act as an observer, and make notes about the form of the air traffic' conversations', as I have very little practice in that area.

There is absolutely an abundance of charts and information for this Airport.!
I am flying with a friend in Hawaii tomorrow
(I hope), and I'm busy trying to prepare for that as well as meet some demands in my personal life.

In any case, I certainly plan on showing up and we'll see how it all plays out
It should be great fun!
Best wishes to all,
David
P.S. I either need new glasses, or a new brain, as I just realized that the event is not in two days but on the 28th of November.
I'm off to wipe the egg off my face.

Thanks for posting the event Niels, see you all on Wednesday. I might fly in on the 747 8i but will swap to DHC6 or the DA40

David: Enjoy virtual Hawaii! We try to set the dates, so it is still a learning schedule, which is not too challenging as most of us are working people. If you are more happy as an observer, it is also no problem.

Volador arriving in style ;)

Thank you Chris
I'm trying to do so much right now, but I really don't like to miss the Wednesday group. The events are so very interesting, and the instructors are absolutely the best!
I look forward to our next meeting
Happy flying,
David
