Does it have to be the MiG-15? No, it doesn't have to be. My thought is just this: with which other airplane would the challenge be equally fun? The MiG allows you to slip out of the bottom end of the Aletsch canyon with >500 kph, and this means you can still gain some substantial altitude for a subsequent descent covering a few kilometers to the next airstrip. Of course in diverse hangars there are other planes with questionable variants of alternative physics. With extreme gliding performance you can reach any runway but then the landing procedure is completely unrealistic.

Actually, i find both flavours of the challenge type very fun: (a) engine out scenario in smaller or bigger airplane from initially less or more altitude and with less or more distance to cover to reach a suitable runway, or (b) speedrun along mountain slopes + engine-out landing.

Getting once more deeper into topic (b), given a certain speedrun line along mountain slopes, it's actually a challenge to find "the right airplane" to make it challenging and fun. A plane with little drag and good glide ratio may make the challenge boring, while a plane with less ability to build up kinetic energy (like any small or slow bush plane) or more drag & energy loss in the turns (like F-14, F-15, F-16) will make it completely impossible to complete the line.

At this moment, I'd have two questions:
1) Is it possible to prepare an engine-out scenario file with airborne initial conditions?
2) Which plane would you guys put on a list of favourite engine-idle speedrun planes?

Footnote on the engine-out topic: With the MiG-15 you have to start modding the airplane code if you want to have a longer engine-out flight time on battery power because the authors set the battery time to less than a minute. What they had in mind was not unpowered landing, but knowing by hart the in-air engine restart procedure. So, you simply cannot do any unpowered flight plus landing unless you're within 1km and low above the runway.

Hmm, sure, but I'm not available for voice comms right now, due to private reasons - we could either talk by PM's or chat on Discord - do you have Discord ?

Shortened route from last event, as we have not made it around?
https://skyvector.com/?ll=46.85527368151487,7.417219693904102&chart=301&zoom=3&fpl=%20LSZG%20LSZJ%20LSGC%204647N00640E%20LSGL%20LSGK%20LSZG

(Foxtrot still in for shared tower?)

A lot of fun events possible.....open for all kinds of aircraft suitable. We can take an occasional break

For engine out scenarios we should spend some time for research to make it a solid emergency training. Sometimes we are missing an "instructor station".

no other ideas -> last proposal is valid :)

On the 7th back to lecture mode and going through IFR-ATC-procedures, primarily training correct understanding and readback clearances, as this might be the most difficult?

ATC update: Our pro ATC guest Marcus will hopefully be with us on Wednesday 14th Dec 2022...

This works out nicely if we fancy doing the xmas special again on the 21st (Eagles custom scenery required)

Great, thanks for the update!

Xmas special sounds good!

Next week we could go through and practice IFR clearance at Zurich, as hearing, understanding and readback requires some training.
And we could be back to Saanen airport for the nice mountain flying.

As above very tight on schedule, so joining a bit later with no real preparation.
We'll definitely manage to entertain ourselves in our favorite area.

Would be be great to have a nice turnout on the 14th with professional guidance on ATC and for the Christmas special on the 21st.

See you later!

This was a fun evening with ATC guidance, nice company and a bit of dev's talk.

@fitschi and 5Y-...UK: Sorry to have this idea only after the event. It would have been easy to include you assuming radio failure. Expect "if you read Grenchen tower make a three sixty turn right." next time. Squak 7600.

Little reminder for reading material for the next event:
https://www.ealts.com/documents/ICAO%20 ... ed.%202007).pdf

Hopefully we have a good turnout to welcome our guest. We might just start again on jitsi and see, what we consider beneficial for everyone.
Maybe sorting out some errors in our VFR communication and starting with IFR.

Next Wednesday ATC IFR event (14th Dec 2022) will be communications on Jitsi. I'm currently attempting to get Open Radar set up for Marcus for this IFR event. As always, anyone is welcome to attend the event, if you're a beginner come and join in and take some notes and even the most basic questions are welcome as we can all learn. We might break the event down into sections where there will be chance for further Q and A or learning points if we get into sticky 'Das ist nicht gut' situations :)

Everyone, please tune in at 19:00 UTC for an initial briefing and chance for a chat and initial questions / discuss the plan. Please make the effort to have your camera on initially for a nice welcome.

If we do manage to get open radar up and running for Wednesday then be advised that *all* communication with ATC will be via Jitsi - details will be posted in the dedicated event thread, there will be no text chat or mumble communication.

A further date for everyone's diary should be the following Wednesday (21st Dec 2022) when I'll suggest we repeat the Christmas special and go on a frozen quest to deliver gifts to remote dwellings on a night time VFR route in the far North, keep an eye on the event thread for further details. Everyone is welcome.

If we depart from Grenchen, Basel (LFSB) should be in range and has all necessary navaids.
Bern (LSZB) is closer, but there are problems with scenery, so probably not ideal... and Zurich is probably too far.

Ok, to keep it simple for Marcus (atc) we'll use Zurich as a base, if we depart from there we can come and go to practice. I might spawn and arive in somthing large and heavy to mix it up a little :)
