Wednesday evening information Zulu: Watch out for that fence

Postby Volador » Sat Nov 13, 2021 10:48 pm

Wednesday 17-11-2021 Norway part 1 or "Watch out for that fence"

ENFL - ENSD - ENOV
Around 40 minutes flying plus break and go arounds (fence encounters?) = around 1 hour

For those not following my attempt at radio navigation description, the skyvector route is here: https://skyvector.com/?ll=61.98005894173708,6.059406819043892&chart=301&zoom=4&fpl=%20ENFL%206146N00557E%206151N00600E%20ENSD%206151N00618E%206155N00617E%206203N00624E%206205N00607E%206209N00559E%20ENOV

ENFL
Tune NDB radio to 384 and standby to 288
Depart ENFL heading 066' climb to 4000
When NDB reads left 90 degrees turn Left Hdg 016' and then follow the fjord valley
Descend to 1500 by the end of the valley and switch to NDB 288
At the valley mouth turn sharp right around the headland and follow the NDB 288 needle to the airport.
Land ENSD (altitude 177) and... "Watch out for that fence!!"

Have a quick break and tune NDB to 369 and standby to 389

Depart ENSD and get onto heading for NDB 369 (about 072') climb to 3000
Switch NDB to 389. Once needle points 90' left, look out and turn left through gap in hills following the NDB 389 (about 345')
Just over the hill and at the waters edge turn right onto (around) Hdg 020', heading for the valley between the two distant hills.
After a few minutes there will be two lakes and NDB 389 needle will be pointing left (about 300'). At the second lake turn left following the valley, roughly onto the NDB 389 heading 290'.
Adjust heading to keep following the fjord , around 290' and later 310'
Stay on the left of the fjord
Descend to 1500 and watch the NDB 389 needle, once NDB reads 90' to the right, turn sharp right onto NDB 389 needle and land ENOV

Time allowing: Bonus return trip via different route to ENSD to avoid that fence one more time to finish.
Tune NDB to 384 and standby to 408
Depart ENOV climb to 3000 and follow NDB 384
When the needle swings behind you swap to NDB 408 and follow the fjord to the left
Keep the NDB roughly ahead and descend to 1500
Follow the fjord and land ENSD once more and do watch out for that fence!

Once again, anyone can join in and you'll get a warm welcome - we have a range of experience between us, come and share your experience or pick up some tips on a very relaxed, fun event.

Re: Wednesday information Alpha, return to Gran Canaria

Postby Volador » Tue Nov 23, 2021 12:55 pm

Information Alpha - The return to Gran Canaria were it all started.
It's hard to believe we're back to information Alpha, it means we've clocked up at least 26 trips on the Wednesday Evening GA Experience. If you're interested then come and join the session. If you're in doubt about all the radio navigation then just follow one of the group, it's a simple route.

GCTS-GCXO-GCLP flying time around 1 hour at 120 kts with two landings, total session time around 2 hrs

The usual guidelines apply for comms (mumble GA Wednesday)
Meet and chat GCTS from 19:00 UTC
Wheels up 19:30 UTC
In-sim time and weather: Afternoon, summer, high pressure region

Tune your NAV1 to frequency 117.7 and set the radial to 70'
We depart GCTS and head 254'
After a few miles turn right onto 332' keeping the sea on our left.
Start a climb to around 6000 for a better view
When we're clear of the mountains, turn right and then track onto the NAV1 frequency 117.7 radial 70' TO
(tracking will mean that you'll have to adjust your heading every few minutes until the needle stays centred - at that point you are flying on the radial - the spoke of the wheel)
Descend slowly and maintain 4000 as the land allows but watch for hills

Land GCXO for a round of Barraquito's or du jus d'orange ;)

Tune NAV2 radio to frequency 112.9 and radial 110'
Set NAV1 radial to 140'
Depart GCXO and get onto NAV1 frequency 117.7 140' FROM
Climb to 3000
Watch NAV2 frequency 112.9 needle and when it centres, change heading (left) to keep the needle centred on 110' radial TO
Fly over Gran Canaria descending to 2000 until the needle starts to fluctuate then turn right onto heading 150'
(optional, change NAV2 radial to 150 and fly on the NAV2 needle FROM)
Look out to the right for GCLP
Land GCLP
Toast our 27 trips with a fun crowd :D and remember, don't drink and fly.

Re: Wednesday information Beta: Birdspotting in Australia

Postby TheEagle » Wed Dec 01, 2021 12:42 am

Description

This is the trip for bird-spotters (yes, both flapping- and fixed-wing !). We start on the small airport of Bairnsdale (YBNS), which lies immediately north of a bird reservate (make sure you don't take too much fuel with you - there won't be any fuel dumps if your engine fails on climb out !). We head north until we come to the Mitchell river, which takes us farther north into slightly higher terrain. After a bending of the river to the west we leave it alone and continue north through a valley which takes us to our half-time stop - Mount Hotham (YHOT) at 4260 feet, the highest airport in the whole of Australia ! Don't crash into the terrain (Piper airplanes seem not to be a good choice for this airport ), and, I hope you brought pullovers. Before we continue along the Co… Co… Cobu… Cobungra  river north of the airport, make sure you have warm feet, so as to able to do fine rudder adjustments ! On the last miles to our beautiful destination Mount Beauty (YMBT) we are guided by the west branch of the Kiewa river.

Route & Schedule
Departure: YBNS, 19:00 UTC / 20:00 CET
Arrival: YMBT, ~20:30 UTC / 21:30 CET
Flying time: ~ 1 hour

Re: Wednesday information Chaos: VFR Turkey chase

Postby TheEagle » Wed Dec 08, 2021 1:15 pm

Thanksgiving is some time ago already, but we can as well have a turkey for Xmas ! :) So, this time we fly in Turkey by VFR, and you have to try and find - well, the turkey of course  ! We depart Saliurfa (LTCH) to the north, maintaining about runway heading. Two flat hills will come into view soon - go through inbetween, then turn right to fly between another two hills. If you continue straight, you will soon see Sanliurfa GAP (LTCS) at the horizon - this is going to be our middle stop.
When we are ready, we continue on a heading of 27° until we meet a river-like arm of a big lake. This we follow until the lake, then turn left and do a big arc along the lake to our final destination Adiyaman (LTCP).

Route & schedule

Meet and chat: 19:00 UTC
Departure: LTCH, 19:15 UTC
Arrival: LTCP, ~ 20:30 UTC.
Route: View on SkyVector, although we don't want to load it into the route manager - this is VFR only.

Scenery

You need my LTCS scenery for this trip - else you will have to find and land on a huge lawn.

Re: Wednesday info Eck: "Eck (heck) it's cold!" xmas special

Postby Volador » Thu Dec 16, 2021 5:32 pm

22nd December 2021 Flightgear Christmas Special. All welcome! Ho! Ho! Ho!

Wednesday Evening GA information Echo (or "Eck!" short for "heck", a Yorkshire expletive, eg "By 'eck, it's cold!") and no, we are not flying around Yorkshire, "Are we 'ekers like" meaning "No, that's not very likely" ...Meanwhile, we have an important VFR mission to deliver presents to little children in three remote, cold, wintery locations in Northern Finland, expect some Christmas cuteness. Flying time will be around 50mins but allow for stops (to admire our Blender handy-work - if you can find it!) and recovery from sliding off into trees, so around 1hr 30mins. You might need skis on your plane - DH Beaver might be good for this one (no skis) if you're brave or C182 if it has a skis option? it dosen't, so maybe the C172 or up-spec piper cub.

Re: Wednesday information: "Eck (heck) it's cold!" xmas spec

Postby Ysop » Fri Dec 24, 2021 10:28 am

Following this post you will find the event post from flights we had early this year and are in the discussion post.

As one or the other might enjoy re-flying it, it makes sense to repost them in this thread as a bundled collection.

So far we have managed to make every Wednesday special.

Thanks everyone for joining and contributing.

Expect a fresh seabreeze, seagulls and seals. Do not forget to bring your lifevest!

Volador wrote in Thu Apr 15, 2021 5:02 pm:Next Wednesday for the best entertainment and challenge the aircraft will be Piper J-3 Cub with Bush Wheels (JSBSim) for a low and slow meander and some beach landings. If you're not familiar with this tail dragger, it's a lot of fun. Do have a go before Wednesday (or don't, and give us all some entertainment!). A top tip: when you get wheels down keep pulling back on the stick while steering with the rudder and be gentle with the brakes :)

Details:
Aircraft: Piper J-3 Cub with Bush Wheels (JSBSim) 65 horsepower (very basic)
Place: LFKO to LFKJ, heading roughly North hitting some beaches and a bit of cross country.
Time: 19:30 UTC LFKO, find a spot or use the grass as this will be fine with your *bush wheels*

Weather: Set for afternoon, summer, high pressure region.
Wheels up 20:00UTC
Wheels up 19:00UTC
Duration: Around 35mins plus the stops (and repairs) will make it just under an hour in total.

This Wednesday session we'll switch back in time to 1948.

Your mission is to fly your DC-3 from Frankfurt to Berlin-Tempelhof.

Charts:
https://www.luftfahrt-bibliothek.de/ber ... s-army.htm You don't need the book, the two charts shown are sufficient. Make sure you know the approach.

starting positions:
positions on the south ramp G02-G14 in way of original Rhein-Main-Base

start 07R/25L (as this is in a similar position to the first grass runway opened)

aircraft to be used:
https://wiki.flightgear.org/Douglas_C-47_Skytrain (download link is below on the wiki page)

Cargo:
Make sure your aircraft is loaded with 7500lbs of food, coal and other vital goods.

cruise:
4500ft, 150kts

approach segments: 110kts

Other speeds as published in the cockpit.
Back in the days going around meant flying straight back to home base, as the constant stream of airplanes wasn't allowing anyone for a second try.
After landing leave the runway at the end.

Aircraft hints:
Upper right knob of clock starts timer. You will need it for the approach.
n/N prop pitch
m/M mixture
L tailwheel lock
Cowl flaps are to the right of Copilot

Additional information on the wiki page and in the aircraft help menu.

Navigation:
We are using equivalent navaids along the route.
So there will be a bit of gap between Fulda VOR and Berlin NDB, which we have to close by dead reckoning.
For Panter there is no NDB, but we can find it visually as a small park at River Spree.

We'll be using the historic NDBs. D-Echo was so kind to provide a nav.dat for this: https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=60#p385070

https://skyvector.com/?ll=52.2629577381 ... 25E%20EDDB

The corridor we have to pass through is 20nm wide. If you fly outside the corrridor, it will cause some diplomatic waves. If you have to land outside, you could find yourself weeks or years later being exchanged against Soviet spies.

If we want to do it historically correct, we would need those navaids implemented:
These navaid positions have been included in the nav.dat. No guarantee about historic accuracy of the positions, but they should be sufficient for our purpose.

schedule
This is a 2hour trip.
Group 1
Wheels up 18:00 UTC

Group 2
wheels up 19:00 UTC

Usually we gather 30min before start time.

Group 1 is for the purists, who want to fly it all along in real time.
Not everybody might make it with his other commitments, so group 2 can do it in a smaller time frame.
Group 2 should speed up the longer stretches with x/X so we all arrive at Berlin NDB about 19:50 UTC.
For the landings we aim at 90 second separation, so about 2nm between us.

communication
https://meet.jit.si/FGtour2021 for chatting, screenshare

Kindly state your initial ramp position and group.
If this is a considered a success, we'll make the return trip via the middle corridor next week.

Looking forward to see you, guys!

Edit: Update with current information.

Sketch as made in the briefing room:

Presumably we'll use 27R at Tempelhof. As we will be coming over Planter, we will easily identify the correct dark pit to land in. Additionally there are two high antennas with anti collision lights.

At EDDF arriving from east it is pretty easy straight in. From the West there is a procedure turn over Frankfurt-Raunheim. As no historic reference could be found, this is pure fantasy. But in those days procedure turns were more common, so it could be possible.

scenery needed

https://github.com/D-ECHO/EDDF_EDDI_Navaid_Addon (same as last week)

booking

There is a bit of glitch in the Tempelhof-scenery, as all parking positions are named "A1".

So we take the middle of the arched parking spot rows and count from east to west.

I take spot 1 - callsign "Berlin 1". I kindly ask you guys to take "spot 2 - Berlin 2", and so on and also use your callsign, in my case "Berlin 1", to log in into multiplayer. This helps to differentiate from other planes and helps, that radio calls reach the right one.

communication

As usual over jitsi https://meet.jit.si/FGtour2021 for chatting/screenshare.

For the official radiocalls please use mumble.

And now comes the special part!:
Thanks to Tobias and Jomo we will have ATC coverage!
They are aware of our groupflight and take care, that we follow an historic example.
Thanks in advance from the whole squadron!

If you guys are new to this: There is nothing to fear and a lot to learn. So just jump in!

preview next weeks: gliding event in the Alps, barbecue and traffic circuits at a small airfield,..... open for ideas!

Re: Wednesday information Foxworks: Firetrot !

Postby TheEagle » Tue Dec 28, 2021 11:45 pm

Happy New Year's Eve everyone ! For the last session of this year, I have prepared something special - fireworks ! But first you have to find your way through the darkness … trust your NAV and ADF indicators to survive !

Schedule

Departure: MDJB 19:00 UTC (20:00 CET)
Arrival: MDLR 20:00 UTC (21:00 CET)

Route

Tune NAV1 to the CDO ILS 108.9, NAV2 to HGR 115.80 radial 030 and ADF to LAS 200.
Takeoff MDJB runway 01, follow NAV1 radial
When ADF is indicating a bearing of 125°, turn right to intercept the NDB.
At the NDB, turn right and follow the NAV2 radial which guides you to our first stop MDSD (Las Americas Intl.)

Tune NAV1 to LRN 116.2 VOR-DME radial 100.
Takeoff MDSD again runway 17 and fly a heading of 93 until the NAV1 VOR comes into range, then follow the tuned radial which will lead you to our final destination MDLR (La Romana Intl.), hopefully in time for the firework !

Simulator options

 • Time of day: You have to set the property /sim/time/gmt to 2021-12-29T03:00:00, either through the property manager or with the command line option --prop:/sim/time/gmt=/sim/time/gmt to 2021-12-29T03:00:00
 • Weather: Real world (or Fair weather if it's too cloudy)
 • ALS / Rembrandt: TURN OFF after the last landing for best appearance of the fireworks ! (unless you got a modern GPU)

Scenery

 • MANDATORY ! (well, assuming you want to see any fireworks …) https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/FGFireworks (there eventually might be some updates, so please do a fresh git pull just before the event)
 • Project 3000 is recommended

Wednesday information Hotel, we've left our bags at ENSG!

Postby Volador » Sat Jan 08, 2022 6:55 pm

Once again, all are welcome to join in the event, please post your GA (General Aviation) aircraft in the event discussion thread here: https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&p=397137#p397137

Information Hotel, 'What? My luggage is still in the HOTEL!?" Yes friends, bear with me as I describe the plot... ok, here goes... group B has gone ahead supposedly with all the bags and are at ENFL and, like a bunch of vitamin D seeking lazy trout, are basking in the few hours of sunlight found in these parts this time of year. Group A are at ENBL and set off for ENFL to join group B thinking that group B has all the bags, keen to get some of that vit. D for themselves. Hmm... to cut a long story short and help cover over the holes in the plot, both groups set off and realise at the same time that neither group has the bags and agree to meet-half way (in the air!), the idea is to regroup in the air and fly to ENSG (SE) where they have all left their bags (and vitamin D capsules) the day before.

What?
General aviation aircraft required.
Post you aircraft (and say hi) in the discussion thread (link above) so we can download and see you in multiplayer.

Where?
Join us on mumble to chat and divide up the groups from 19:00. We should (in theory) intercept each other after about 12 nautical miles

ENFL group:
- tunes to FLO VOR-DME 112.30 MHz
- tracks R 122 F

ENBL group:
- tunes to FLO VOR-DME 112.30 MHz
- tracks R 302 T

When?
Meet and chat (alternative plot suggestions etc) 19:00 UTC 12th Jan 2022, mumble GA Wednesday channel
Wheels up 19:30 UTC

Around 53 mins flying (says Skyvector (if you flew in a straight line ...and nailed your approach with no other aircraft in the sky to avoid)), but as usual we're anticipating adding time for go arounds, unplanned course deviation, loosing sight of the aircraft you were following (crashes? surely not!) and, we could always add a stop at ENBL before heading down to ENSG so allow about 1hr 30mins.

Re: Wednesday information India: In the Navy!

Postby Ysop » Fri Jan 14, 2022 7:26 pm

You are hereby ordered and requested to take part in a basic training session as introduction to navy aircraft operations.

Time:
Meet and chat 19:00 UTC 19th Jan 2022, mumble GA Wednesday channel
Wheels up at your discretion.

Location:
KNPA, Pensacola Navy Air Station.
Ramp2. Kindly taxi to a free spot prior to connecting.
https://www.airnav.com/airport/KNPA

Aircraft: Texan T6 II, in FGAddon as part of the Pilatus PC-9M package.

Weather: real time, real weather

Communication: Mumble, GA-Wednesday channel

Recommended training material:
https://www.t6bdriver.com/c3102.html

If you really have time: https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/local/docs/pat-pubs/P-868.pdf
Looking forward to see spectacular overhead breaks!

Why are we doing this? As every Wednesday for fun!
Additionally this can give new insights for flying. The T6II is abt. 50% fast then our usual GA planes. The visual pattern is much tighter than we are used to. And the curved approach is a challenge in itself.

This week there is no route. Use it as a training opportunity. Just intense air work. Partly you will have an LSO (landing signal officer) guiding you in at the touchdown zone.

Are we going to see some formation flying?

Re: Wednesday information Kilo: Island spotting

Postby TheEagle » Tue Feb 01, 2022 12:37 am

This week we'll do some island spotting and hopping in the Greek Aegean Sea. If anyone get's lost over the sea, there are a number of radio stations to guide you !

We takeoff from LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos and stay on the runway heading until we meet the coast then follow it to the south-east. After about 15 miles we leave the mainland for an island on a heading of 117, then for another very small one on 76°. After passing those we turn south-east to get on course for our first stop Dimitrios Vikelas LGSO. After a pause we continue south-east to Paros (LGPA). If anyone has time (and courage) left we can extend the trip to Milos LGML on a south-west-ish heading by 36 miles (21 minutes).

Schedule

Meet and chat: 19:00 UTC (20:00 CET)
Wheels up: 19:15 UTC (20:15 CET)
Planned arrival at LGPA: 20:30 UTC (21:30 CET)
Extension arrival time: 21:00 UTC (22:00 CET)

Route

Skyvector (just as reference, no magenta lines please ! ): https://skyvector.com/?ll=37.3194992782 ... GPA%20LGML

 1. LGAV -> coast 214° 9 nm
 2. along coast 127° 14nm
 3. coast -> first island 117° 14 nm
 4. first island -> second island 076° 21nm
 5. second island -> LGSO 131° 16nm
 6. LGSO -> LGPA 157° 25nm
 7. Optional extension LGPA -> LGML 233° 36nm

Navaids in case you get lost (or just for fun) (one per leg):
 1. SAT VOR-DME 109.6 radial 205 FROM
 2. SUN NDB 319
 3. KEA VOR-DME 115.0 radial 295 TO
 4. KEA VOR-DME 115.0 radial 75 FROM
 5. SYR NDB 417
 6. PAO NDB 386
 7. MIL VOR-DME 113.5 radial 60 TO, then MIL NDB 378

Simulator options

Weather: Real world
Time: Afternoon

Recommended aircraft

Any that is equipped with a DME, with floats would be a good idea in case you have an engine failure ! Cessna 172, 182, 208 and 210. If you choose a different one, please post it on the discussion thread so we can download it
