Wait - do you mean you don't know how to add it or don't you know what to do with it ?

Okay, we can change that ! :D

  1. Load the route on SkyVector.
  2. In the Flightplan panel, click the Export button (circled in red):
    Image
  3. In the "Export flight plan" dialog, select the third option (GPX), then click the "Download Dynon GPX file" button.
  4. Your browser's file saving dialog is opened. Remember where you save that file !
  5. Now load up FlightGear at the departure of the flight plan.
  6. When you're ready to takeoff, open the route manager : Menu -> Autopilot -> Route manager
  7. Click the "Load" button and select the flight plan file (any .gpx or .fgfp file works).
  8. Click the "Activate" button, and you're ready to takeoff and follow the route ! :)

Note: FG automatically selects the next waypoint when you pass past one. But if you are more than some magic distance away from it, it does not do that - in that case you can select the next one with Menu -> Autopilot -> Next waypoint.

You can just fly along it - wps are selected automatically. Actually, when hand-flying you don't really need to worry about WPs - just load the route, activate, and fly. But I can explain this detailed over voice on Wednesday, if you come 10 minutes sooner ? :)

I can only add, that in my case FG won't read saved flight plans from browser's default download directory, due to security settings, so I have to copy the file to ~/.fgfs directory first and load it from there.

Having the route displayed on a second monitor helps in unknown terrain a lot. After all a pilot is allowed to have a tablet, right? :)

correct...

i would put it in ~/.fgfs/Export since that's where FG should be defaulting to when it writes exported files...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

This is really weird - I have no problem loading the FP file from my home directory (not FG_HOME !!). I am using the 2020.4.0 AppImage - could I maybe have disabled these security settings in some way

Also, why don't you download the file directly into the .fgfs folder ?

Indeed, they are found there by default. Thank you for good suggestion.

@TheEagle: why? because I find it more secure and more convenient to point my browser to a specific download directory. Once a file is downloaded I can examine it and make a decision where it will go. Maybe to Documents, maybe to another themed directory, or maybe straight to the trash ;)

You can do that directly from the browser - you can put the file anywhere you want !

True, but note that browsers tend to remember last used destination directory. This is one vector for potential attack. Should I point my browser downloads destination to some sensitive directory and then download something without paying much attention, maybe being distracted or in a hurry just clicking OK, I run the risk of substituting some important file with a content I wouldn't necessarily like...
