Wednesday evening information Lima: Harz VFR and land. chall

Postby TheEagle » Sat Aug 07, 2021 8:25 pm

We take off from Ballenstedt (EDCB) heading east. We overfly a small town called Thale and follow a small stream called "Bode" and the lake it ends in. Then, we follow some highways further east until we come to the small town Braunlage. There, we turn left south-west and follow highway 27 (in Germany highways are called Landstraße) to Bad Lauterberg. We make a sharp turn right and continue west-north until the town Osterode (maybe we find some Easter eggs there ? ). The Söse reservoir and some more streets take us north-east to Mt. Brocken where we will land (go-arounds are permitted, but only possible with a powerful machine ! ) and have a snack in the Brockenwirt. You will only have the landing strip called DEMB (D=Germany, E=East, MB=Mt. Brocken) if you have below mentioned custom scenery installed !!! After a small rest we continue first north-east to the (under tourists well-known) Wernigerode, then a long way north-west overflying multiple small towns and villages. After 80 minutes of flying, we land in Hildesheim (ICAO is EDVM).

Navigation: I've made a route for orientation, but in-sim the navigation should mostly be done by following roads, streams and lakes !

Airspeed: About 100 knots, so we can look at the scenery without haste
Flight level: Around 500 AGL (not MSL !!!) - we will keep quite close to the terrain so that we can better follow streets !

Scenery: You must have my custom scenery for this trip, else you won't find any airport !
Additionally, I recommend the Project3000 scenery, and download Orthophotos with:
Code: Select all
./create_bbox.pl --latLL 51.5 --lonLL 9.75 --latUR 52.4 --lonUR 11.4 -- --scenery_folder ../fgscenery/MtBrocken-landing-strip-scenery --cols 4 --theight 8192

With a 1MB/s internet connection this takes about half an hour

Meet and chat from 17:30 UTC
Takeoff: 18:00 UTC (=20:00 CEST) (=19:00GMT BST)
Flying time: about 80 minutes

Comms:
Primary: Mumble, preferred
Secondary: Standard Jitsi link https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday - let us know in multiplayer chat if you want to use Jitsi.
Aircraft: Any small GA plane that has STOL abilities, or helicopters ! Must be able to fly at 100 knots. My recommendation is either the C208B Grand Caravan or the Pilatus PC-6. Cessna 172p won't be able to take off from DEMB, I'm afraid ! If you want to fly a helicopter, please train before the trip ! (or don't, and let us laugh at your crashes / mistakes  )

Insim weather: Real weather, or if it is too bad, Border of a high pressure zone.
Insim time: Real time

P.S.: I know I'm not very good at writing trip descriptions - sorry if my text is dull … :?

Re: Wednesday evening information Oscar: Chille out ;)

Postby TheEagle » Tue Aug 24, 2021 5:18 pm

This time we are going to explore the remote mountains and lakes of the very south end of the south-american continent - in Chile. We depart at Rio Grande (SAWE) and fly south (heading 160°). Over a big lake we turn slightly right to a heading of 192°, cross a very long lake (no worries, we cross it, not follow  ) and fly through some small valley which takes us to a big valley. We follow that with a heading of 103° until the end, then make a sharp right turn to 193° which points us straight at a small airstrip on the coast of a long fjord called Guardiamarina (SCGZ). There we can chill a bit and have some chilli chicken  . When we are all relaxed we follow the fjord west (273°), refuel at Ushuaia Malvinas Argentinas (SAWH) and continue on north-west through a deep valley which takes us back to the long lake we crossed earlier. This time, we follow it west-north-west (280°) and arrive at our final destination, Azopardo SCAZ. If you don't find it, well, then that means that you didn't read the whole of this post and / or forgot to install my custom scenery linked below !

Schedule :
Meet and chat from 18:00 UTC 25.08.21
Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST) (=19:00GMT BST)
Flying time: about 70-80 minutes.

Simulator setup :
Weather: Real weather, or if it is too bad, Border of a high pressure zone.
Time: Real time
Aircraft: Small GA plane or heli

Scenery :
Photoscenery is recommended but generic should do it:

.~/photoscenery$ ./create_bbox.pl --latLL -55 --lonLL -69.5 --latUR -53.5 --lonUR -67 -- --theight 2048 --cols 2 --scenery_folder ../fgscenery/Photoscenery/Chile
Let it run over night - it takes rather long.

Additionally, you should have my custom scenery adding SCAZ to the list of available airports.

Re: Wednesday evening information Quebec: C182S familiarizat

Postby benih » Mon Sep 06, 2021 6:08 pm

Information Quebec: C182S familiarization

This Wendesday I will host a familiarization to the Cessna C182S.
Together we will look at the instruments, the basic flight phases and the state of simulation.
Details/planned contents are here: viewtopic.php?p=391732#p391732

So get the latest c182s from GitHub (or fgaddon trunk hangar version for 2020.4/next) to enjoy all the newest stuff!
We will meet at Saarbrücken (EDDR).
Attention: As this is no formal flying event, you can also join without multiplayer this time. The focus this time is solely your plane and pilot seat.

Preparation/Material:

  • Prepare a notepad a pencil, so you can take notes
  • You need the checklist: https://github.com/HHS81/c182s/raw/mast ... cklist.pdf
(the PDF corresponds to the insim checklist, so you can also use that if you like. However the printed version allows to add notes; I did add some additional important checks not in the official list, so I highly recommend to print it, if you want to get serious with the C182S. These notes will be expanded once we do the KAP140 course and/or the failure-simulation event. I also copied the aircrafts normal/emergency speeds and the weights to the last blank page of the checklist, and some important radio frequencies etc.).
  • The link to the POH with all the gory details; not needed for the event, but handy to look-up things afterwards: http://tssflyingclub.org/documents/C182S_POH.pdf
  • If you find time, browse trough the Wiki entry: https://wiki.flightgear.org/C182s

Schedule :
Meet and chat from 18:00 UTC
Beni gets cold feet from 18:30 UTC
Duration: I plan this to take about an hour, but honestly I have no Idea. It also depends on raised questions etc.

Simulator setup :
Weather: Fair weather
Time: Noon
Season: Summer
Aircraft: Only C182S this time, preferrably the latest GIT version
Special settings: You need to select the "parked / cold-and-dark" state of the plane. You can find it at the aircraft selection screen of the launcher, below the small plane thumbnail when the C182s is selected.

Scenery :
Use default, but maybe you still have the Photoscenery from the Mt. Brocken trip.

Route :
We meet at Saarbrücken/EDDR.
No specific route. For flying maneuvers I think we just go a cardinal compass direction I will dice out before takeoff
Again, attention: This time it is perfectly fine if you don't join the MP-Servers. If you decide to fly locally, I would advice you to start on a runway threshold.
I really would advice to do it locally, because it safes a) taxi-time and b) framerates.

Comms:
Voice: Mumble, preferred (radio-mumble.flightgear.fr / special events)
Jitsi for screensharing: Standard Jitsi link[/quote]
Comm rules in effect: This time i want to introduce a small rule. You please ask questions as soon as you want to, and please, stop my talking flow if you didn't understand something (technical reasons, or it might very well be that my english is too bad). It is important that you get what i say and describe, otherwise you can't follow the procedures good.
I really want to do this in a casual and funny way, this is no school class :)

Postby benih » Wed Sep 08, 2021 10:20 pm

Information Romeo: C182S familiarization
Same as last week: We continue the familiarization and this time will really focus on the engine management and the flight maneuvers. Promise!

Same time, same place.
We start again with cold-and-dark and this time go trough the preflight individually, but together.
Then i tell you the proper priming techniques, tell you about the differences to colder weather and what to do for spark plug icing and also flooded engine.
We will play with the mixture settings and then prepare for takeoff; in air, like preplanned, we will do some basic maneuvers and see how the power settings affect the airspeed and engine parameters.
Then we will learn how to land properly and how to park the plane safely.

Re: Wednesday evening information Sierra: Alps crossing / KA

Postby benih » Tue Sep 21, 2021 1:14 pm

Tomorrow we will conduct the alps crossing trip from the Suggested flighs wiki.
While flying this, we will play around with the KAP140 autopilot, so please pick a plane equipping this. Please pay special attention that you have the new model from Sascha (so maybe pick the recent c182s github version again) as the old model is not so advanced.

Preparation material:
- https://wiki.flightgear.org/Bendix/King ... _Autopilot article on the wiki for familiarization

Route: https://wiki.flightgear.org/Suggested_F ... g_the_alps / extended: https://skyvector.com/?ll=45.3328404120 ... 47E%20LIPX
  • Airspeed: We aim for about 120-130 knots
  • Flight level: varying between 3000 to 6000ft (so set your QNH setting)
  • Initial navaids:
    1. Tune ADF to NDB BZO (362).
    2. Tune NAV1 to Verona VOR (115.8 MHz, Radial 160)
    3. Tune Nav1 standby frequency to Verona RWY 04 ILS (110.1 MHz @ radial 46 - note the radial down).

We will extend the leg south to Verona, and maybe speed up in the middle of the trip, so everyone can make it, as the final legs will introduce the KAP NAV/REV and APR modes.
For landing, please record the following outbound ILS tracking procedure turn (to have fun with the KAP, it's also in the KAP manual)
  • We will approach the Airfield by intercepting the VOR radial 160 and fly towards it using that beam.
  • A minute or so before reaching the airfield, we switch to ROL mode (to free up the selections)
  • We switch to Radial 46 (on the NAV and the HDG-Bug!) and enter HDG, then REV mode. => This makes the AP follow the backcourse of the radial (fly sw; we will expirience some overshoot due to the closeness of the station).
  • Once we are fine with the distance, we switch to HDG again. Then we switch NAV1 to the ILS frequency (course at hdg-bug is already setup to 46° from the VOR, luckily it is positioned perfectly here). the plane starts the procedure turn.
  • When in the turn, we can activate APR to start the ILS capture. (technically this enables 46° beam capture mode, since we are coming from HDG mode.)

Meet and Chat: 18:00 UTC (=20:00 CEST)
Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST) at ED02 Fuessen
Comms: Mumble for chat; Standard Jisti link for screenshare (https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday)
Planes: Small GA, like C172 or C182
Starting state: started engine (to save time; but of course this is the perfect spot to train what we've learned the last two trips and do the preflight check!)
Insim weather: Live weather (or Border of high pressure if live weather is non-VFR)
Insim time: Early morning

Special notes: You will need the latest KAP140 for this. It is equipped in the git version of the C182s and I think also on the C172p. You recognize it when applying power to it; it runs trough its internal Preflight check and displays "PFT <some numbers>".
I will want to start the session by telling you some short introductionary words about the KAP140 and run you trough the additional preflight check items (which are not in the checklists).

Wednesday eve info. Tango: Mystery Islands Tourist Tour

Postby Volador » Thu Sep 23, 2021 5:14 pm

Wednesday 29-09-2021 is the Mystery Islands Tourist Tour (Part 1).

Departure airport and route will be posted here at 18:15 UTC. Takeoff planned for 18:30 UTC

To mark the end of the summer we will pilot a fleet of GA / Turboprop planes around "some islands". Turn up early on Mumble or Jitsi (details below). The tourists need to tour and enjoy the (mystery) islands and it's our job to get them around in one piece! We'll need nerves of steel for a couple of these airports noted worldwide for their challenges. Practice your short field landings for the best chance of walking away with a satisfied smile, safe in the knowledge those tourists will want to get back in your plane for the next leg of the tour. Expect VFR fun ...and bring sun-screen ...oh no, have I said too much?

Once again, anyone can join in and you'll get a warm welcome - we have a range of experience between the regulars and it's a great way to meet other pilots, share your experience or pick up some tips in a very relaxed, fun event.

Meet and chat (Mumble GA-Wednesday channel): 18:00 UTC (=20:00 CEST)
Takeoff: 18:30 UTC (=20:30 CEST)
Departure airport: Revealed 18:10 UTC
Route: Revealed 18:10 UTC
Comms: Mumble channel 'Special events/GA-Wednesday' for chat; Standard Jisti link for screenshare https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday
Planes: GA, C182, Turboprop - Aim for around 120-130 kts 2000ft and short field capabilities plus life vests.
Insim weather: Live weather (or Border of high pressure if live weather is non-VFR)
Insim time: Noon

Check out the discussion on the dedicated discussion thread https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=39025&start=1200 and post your aircraft type there so we can download it in advance and see each other in the sea on the multiplayer.

(Missing) Information Tango

Departing TFFG / St Maarten - Grand Case, wheels up 18:30 UTC Wednesday 29-9-2021

Wednesday evening information Victor: Pyrenées landing chall

Postby TheEagle » Mon Oct 11, 2021 6:15 pm

Description

This week we fly through the Pyrenées visiting the Pic du Midi and "Altiport 007" (aka LFIP "Peyresourde-Balestas).

After departure to the south from LFIM "St. Gaudens-Montréjeau" we follow the Garonne river until Margnac, from where La pique brings us to LFCB "Bagnères de Luchon", where we can have a small pause and maybe drain our fuel tanks in case we have to much fuel left for a short field landing. We then continue to the west while climbing to about 6000 feet to have enough altitude to cross a mountain pass. Just behind the pass lies our next stop - "Altiport 007" of Peyresourdes-Balestas, or LFIP. Be warned - it is rather hidden in the forest ! Additionally, the runway is short and goes upwards rather steep. Go-arounds are granted ! :) And don't forget to fill up your tanks, but not too much - you won't get another chance !
The next leg takes us across the border into the spanish Pyrenées for a while, then back over french terrain past Pic du Midi on which we sadly cannot land   Instead, we do a water landing on the near Lac Bleu (Blue Lake) with the option of walking up to the Café du Midi and having a snack.
The last leg of this route takes us back down into lower terrain - the Ousse valley takes us to our final destination LFBT "Tarbes-Ossun-Lourdes".

Schedule

17:45: meet and chat
18:00 - 18:15: wheels up

Sim settings

Weather: Live weather, forecast says sunny weather and winds up to 6 kts
Time: Afternoon - we need good visibility to find the airport

Communication

Scenery

DO NOT FORGET to download my custom scenery below, else you will not have the LFIP airport !!!
  • My custom scenery for LFIP - download at https://github.com/TheFGFSEagle/LFIP-scenery - but please wait with downloading until Wednesday morning, because I need to fix the elevation of the buildings and streets.
  • Photoscenery is highly recommended, because we have some material bug that makes the Azores material being applied in the Pyrenees, but not on the scenery tile I built with TerraGear, which I could not find neither a reason nor a solution for, and with Photoscenery we don't need to bother about that. The command is
    Code: Select all
    $~/photoscenery ./create_bbox.pl --latLL 42.5 --lonLL -0.25 --latUR 43.25 --lonUR 0.75 -- --cols 6 --scenery_folder fgscenery/Photoscenery/Pyrenees

Route

https://skyvector.com/?ll=42.8747564205 ... 03W%20LFBT

Aircraft

Amphibious STOL capable (DHC6, C208B) is recommended, but maybe someone might want to show us his heli skills ? :D
If you decide to use another aircraft than the above listed, please post it on the discussion thread so we can download it.

Description

This week we fly through the Pyrenées again visiting the Pic du Midi and "Altiport 007" (aka LFIP "Peyresourde-Balestas).

After departure to the south from LFCG "St. Girons-Antichan" we follow Le Lez until Castillon-le-Couseron, from where a few valleys bring us to LFCB "Bagnères de Luchon", where we can have a small pause and maybe drain our fuel tanks in case we have to much fuel left for a short field landing. We then continue to the west while climbing to about 8000 feet to have enough altitude to cross multiple mountain passes and the french-spanish border. Be warned - it is rather hidden in the forest, the runway is short and goes upwards rather steep - go-arounds are granted ! :)
We continue through beautiful valleys and over high mountains past Pic du Midi and land on the nearby Lac Bleu (Blue Lake - really great name  ). There we have the option of drinking some whiskey with french baguette at the Café du Midi on the tip of Pic du Midi !
The last leg of this route takes us back down into lower terrain to our final destination LFDQ "Castelgnau-Magnoac".

Description

This week we fly through the Pyrenées again visiting the "Altiport 007" (aka LFIP "Peyresourde-Balestas").

After departure to the south-west from LFJH "Cazères-Palaminy" we follow the Garonne then continue south into high terrain (max altitude will be 9000 ft !) and soon cross the french-spanish border. Midway into the flight we have a water landing at about 8000 ft. Then, we fly westwards across the valley, cross a high mountain pass and continue south to "Altiport 007" LFIP at 5100 ft, which seems not to be such a challenge as I thought it is (but still, set full flaps !). After about 50 minutes of flying time, we hopefully all arrive safely at LFCB "Bagnères-de-Luchon". There we can have some gratis heli exercises !

Schedule

18:00: meet and chat
18:15 - 18:30: wheels up

Sim settings

Weather: Live weather
Time: Afternoon - we need good visibility to find the airport
Multiplayer: Collisions enabled -> Ticked !

Re: Wednesday evening information X-ray: Lost in England

Postby Ysop » Sat Oct 30, 2021 3:35 pm

Description

This trip takes us to east and south England to the Goodwood airfield.
It is meant to be a navigation challenge, so we'll keep a few minutes of separation.
The methods you will use is pilotage and dead reckoning.
It is vital, that you keep track with your navlog.
So we'll let go of the magenta line and sharpen our skills.

- no GPS
- no multiplayermap
- no flying with HUD
- AP (if any) only in ROL/ALT mode

There is a purpose behind this trip, as it should prepare for a greater challenge.

Schedule

19:00 UTC meet and chat
19:15 - 19:30 UTC: wheels up

Sim settings

real weather. If you like the extra challenge, fly at night.

Route

Start: EGMJ

Destination: EGHR

Skyvector:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=51.5822693094 ... 41W%20EGHR
As said: we don't want to load it as a route to the route planner. The start point should be EGMJ, not Cambridge! (skyvector does not know EGMJ).

From EGMJ fly abt. 70° 10nm to reach Cambridge University in the middle of the town to start the route.

Fallback route:
https://skyvector.com/?ll=51.4997967297 ... 41W%20EGHR
This route is meant to be an alternative in case you miss one of the waypoints.

The following VORs will guide you to the destination:
Biggin 115.1
Ockham 115.3
Goodwood 114.75

Before the flight draw the Navlog with current weather and use this during your flight.
Image
Skyvektor takes into account current weather, but unfortunately takes landmarks only in cryptic GPS-coordinates

Make your own printout (or just pen and paper) prior to start and use the following:
Image

1 Cambridge university
2 over Saffron Walden
3 east of Chelmsford
4 cables at Thames turn
5 crossing at Sevenoaks
6 crossing at Caterham
7 crossing at Guildford
8 hill at Hasleford

aircraft:
General aviation.
It is worth posting on the discussion thread which one you use.

maps
https://i2.wp.com/nats.aero/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Southern-England_Ed40_v2_Standard.jpg (Best I could find for this trip. First leg missing)

Additional information:
Navigation log: https://alexaviation.wordpress.com/2016 ... ation-log/ (might be interesting, but not required for the trip)
E-6B: use free E6B on your mobile or https://e6bx.com/e6b/ (you might need it to update wind corrections)

There is an optional photoscenery http://www.fguk.me/hangar/download/3-scenery/593-england-wales-orthophotos-4k-terrain-textures 6 GB of download.

Special tasks:
-arrive at Goodwood exactly 20:40
- get fuel prediction right

Good luck, Gentlemen!

Re: Wednesday evening information Yankee: Man overboard!

Postby benih » Tue Nov 09, 2021 8:31 am

I show you specifics in the winter time preflight of the C182s and we will then be dropping Parachuters out the door into the cold!
(thanks for your willingness to test this with me)

Schedule:
Meet and chat from 19:00 UTC (=20:00 CET)
Event start: 19:30 UTC at a parking position at TFFJ
Takeoff: when the engines are warm
Flying time: As long as we want and have fun

Simulator setup:
weather: Use this METAR in the launcher's manual weather settings: "XXXX 121100Z 18000KT 12SM SCT048 FEW300 M05/M12 Q1022 NOSIG"
time: Noon
Aircraft: C182S, special development branch: https://github.com/HHS81/c182s/tree/MPPara (zip file)
Special:
  • Airplane Startup mode: "parked/dark&cold"
  • In Airplane options menu: activate the complex engine procedures and also the Parachuters mod
  • In standard fuel/payload menu: load up passengers :)
  • Adjust your LOD sliders so the detailed model gets shown from far away (I believe the remote parachuters will only spawn if you have the remote's detailed model loaded at dropping time.)

Scenery :
Doesn't matter I think / As you like (default should be fine)

Route :
We start at a parking position at TFFJ and stay with the Island.
Starting with 19:30 UTC we will quickly walk troug the preflight phase which leaves us with a warming engine.
While warming, we will ensure everyone has the proper settings for the parachuters and can discuss further procedures.
When we have warm engines (we may opt to accelerate the sim to speed this up if needed), we will start the engine, and warm it a little further.
After the engine runup we may clean out fouled spark plugs and then we are ready to go.

We line up, takeoff, climb to 8000 while trying to get into a nice (V-shaped?) formation, head back and drop off our jumpers over the airport at about 75 kias (aircraft options -> jump button / or click them manually).

Jumper considerations:
The jumpers will climb to the strut, which will induce drag and weight to your right side, so be prepared for that. When they release, the weight comes off instantly. Don't let the plane stall, watch your airspeed and counter the movement with the rudder. The models do not climb out visually, but the PAX disappear from the inside roughly about half the weight is on the wing strut.
For preparation you can also read: https://www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/l ... ations.pdf (its not mandatory)

Comms:
Primary: Mumble, preferred ( radio-mumble.flightgear.fr / special events )
Fallback: Standard Jitsi link https://meet.jit.si/FGFS-GA-Wednesday - let us know in multiplayer chat if you want to use Jitsi.
