I would rather do some nice VFR flight, maybe fly around Gran Canaria, and do this with ATC practicing?
Maybe we find a tower volunteer :)

Volador and TheEagle,

Sorry for responding late, but I did some further testing.
It appears that order of --fg-scenery=... command line options does not matter, at least I did see exactly the same Lukla and basecamp objects regardless of the scenery order.

I also started to suspect that my scenery copies might be outdated, but this:
Code: Select all
~/fgscenery/FGFS-MtEverest-base-camp-scenery$ git status
On branch main
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/main'.

~/fgscenery/Nepal-CustomScenery$ git status
On branch master
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/master'.

Changes not staged for commit:
   deleted:    Objects/e080n20/e086n27/Models/Building3WindowFrame.PNG
   deleted:    Objects/e080n20/e086n27/Models/Building3WindowFrame2.PNG
        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ these were renamed to lowercase .png

Untracked files:
   Models    <-----  this directory was missing, after adding it fences etc. started to work
   Objects/e080n20/e086n27/Models/Building3WindowFrame.png
        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ these are old images with new lowercase extension

tells me, I am on par with git, plus my additional repairs to correct file names and make referenced models accessible. I wonder if I should send a pull request?

So I am at a loss what to test next. Could rendering options have an influence here?

Re missing ESBC-runway-marker: TheEagle, maybe the commit went to some branch?
You probably did not see the fence for the same reason I did not see it initially. The 'Models' folder is missing in the scenery (which produces a bunch of error messages in FG log). Once I symlinked the generic Models directory into the scenery, fences appeared (and errors in log disppeared) :)

On next trips:
- I would also like to redo the Himalaya at some time, maybe with more success ;)
- I um.. mumbled ;) a few words on flying over Poland (in fact, Tatry mountains on Slovak - Polish border) but, after Himalaya, it will seem like a walk in the park. I will submit the idea here though, as a backup
- another nice option might be visiting Marina di Campo on Isola d'Elba - a short flight from Grosetto with a chance to practice some basic instrument navigation. If it is too short, the flight could be extended to Corsica and Sardinia.

We don't have to go spectacular each time, so why not going into the Polish mountains?

Actually I like the idea of exploring lesser common regions and in the last events we had only winners so far.

...and yes, Lukla event to be repeated. Maybe next month?

agree @ysop, a gentle trip with a couple of stops or even a round trip with fixes is a nice way to spend an hour or so, we've got the whole globe to go at :)

Mariuszxc - I would like to experience the Tatry mountains area - I was hoping you'd take the bait ;) - all ideas are welcome and you would only need to plan a start and destination (or even back to the start) - a rough plan is about 45 mins flying which expands to about 1 hour+ when there are multiple pilots to organise. Let us know when you have selected a route :D I'm sure we'll all enjoy it.

OK, so let me depart from classic skyvector way of presenting things and offer you this (mostly) radio navigation 'puzzle' (shorthand is mine an if it conforms to any standard it is by pure chance):

DEP LZTT
NDB PW 418
VOR PPD 112.10 R275F
CLB 5000ft

@over NDB PW : VOR R273F
visual check: passing over Liptovska Mara (Liptovska Lake)
@DIST 34Mi : VOR R271F

tune NDB ZLA 404
tune ZNA 06 ILS 108.15 R059

@ZLA BRG 90 : HDG360
intercept ZNA ILS
LND LZZI

(have a beer) ;)

DEP LZZI
VOR DME JAB 116.4 R68T
NDB JAB 387
CLB 4000ft

@DIST 1Mi : VOR R150F
CLB 8000ft
@DIST 21Mi: HDG 50

vis check: entering valley
vis check: passing over lakes

HDG 360 + NDB PW BRG 180, EXP DSC 3500ft

LND EPNT

celebrate :-)

So this is mostly on southern side of Tatra Mountain, in Slovakia, but later passing through a beautiful (irl) valley to Poland and landing on a field with a long aero-club history. Cessna 172 will be just fine.

Is there a 'short tutorial for dummies' on how to place additional scenery objects? I would like to place at least a windsock or two in EPNT..

Can someone explain what all this (for example NDB PW) means ? Sorry if this is a beginners question; but I only know how to tune in a freq and bearing / heading and look at the NAV display / ADF / whatever it's called.

Those are a list of radio navigation aids, their identifiers, frequencies, and radials (including to or from).

NDBs (non-directional radio beacons) transmit their Morse code identifier and nothing more. You tune the ADF navigation receiver to them and can check that you have tuned to the right one by listening to the identifier. They are used with an ADF (automatic direction-finding) instrument that have a compass card and one or sometimes two needles than can point to NDB beacons.

VOR (VHF omnidirectional radio range) transmit two signals and and, in Morse code, their identifier. You tune them in with the NAV1 or NAV2 radio receivers, and can check the identifier by listening to the Morse code. There are several variants of instruments that can use them, but in general they will be able to show how far off your flight path is daviation from a radial, a line going from the VOR in a certain direction. You can fly the radials both to and from the VOR.

The localizer of an ILS (instrument landing system) is akin to a VOR, but lead up to a runway threshold. You often use the same instrument for VOR and ILS. Remember to set the radial for those too.

Like: "VOR PPD 112.10 R275F "

Tune VOR named PPD, Frequency 112.10MHz, select Radial 275 FROM

Thank you, I hope you will have fun.
I am adding objects to final destination, as it is a bit barren. I hope to finish on time for the coming Wednesday (thank you, TheEagle, for wiki link!) but it is up to the group if/when you would like to fly it.

I'll just add, that in my shorthand I used semicolon as a separator

<condition> : <action>

and if there is a plus sign, it is equivalent to AND (so all conditions must be true)

<condition1> + <condition2> : <action>

and bearings are relative to heading, so for example:

@ZLA BRG 90 : HDG360

means: if (condition) ZLA NDB is abeam to my right, then (action) turn to heading 360.

Last week's time (1800 UTC) was perfect for my timezone, so my vote would go for that if it works with the rest of the crew!
