The best tip is to get comfortable an proficient at flying as slow as possible, maintaining a constant pitch attitude and adjust descent rate only by power. For really-really short fields and steep descends, fly with the warning stall horn on! The safety margin is small, but still there. A few seconds before touchdown give a short power burst to increase your airspeed and achieve a transition. This only works well with a proper throttle input / lever, with the keyboard you are too slow to do that.
Practice this away from the airport and at safe altitude first, know the power settings, pitch angle, resulting descent rate and so on. Keep in mind that you need to adjust everything for a 6000ft airport!
