All are welcome for next Wednesday, general aviation aircraft of your choice and it is about 1 hr with around 45 mins flying time departing LFKR St Reny de Maurienne ( airport is 7352 in Flightgear ) then into the mountains and calling at LFHU (for the landing challenge). Those that survive will then continue on enjoying the Alps scenery where we will plan to finish at LFLG

Meet 7352 (LFKR) 17:30 UTC for pre-flight briefings and chat

Also, could we change the route ? A landing in LFHU is almost impossible; I had to try it ten times before I finally managed to get down onto the runway without breaking up my gear, and even then, I overran the runway  :(

When you enter into oscillation (speeding up, almost hitting the tow rope and then no pull as the rope isn't tight, slowing down, ...), in my experience applying airbrakes anti-cyclical helps.

This turns out to be not really true, in fact a rather large elastic constant can actually give a smoother ride, even though I haven't yet found a "perfect" setting

Indeed it is! :) I planned the route specifically around this challenge. Great that you're practicing your skills Eagle, you can give us some tips!

It is possible, of course. Know your plane, your short field technique and most important: precise altitude, because the terrain looks treacherous... I landed a C208 Caravan there twice, yesterday. I'm looking forward to the tour!

Yeah, only problem is, that the altitude offset for the approach option in the FG launcher doesn't work correctly for this airport … Always puts me out directly before a hillside on the same altitude of about 4500 ft over sea level, no matter if I specify 6000ft over sea level, 12000ft over sea level, or 1000ft over field level, or 10000ft over field level in the launcher… Do you encounter the same behaviour ?

this sounds like you are trying to use an approach preset for the craft... perhaps don't do that? instead, load up at the airport, take off, fly around, and then land... that's really the best way until the craft preset stuff is worked out to be better than it currently is... it that's what you are using, of course...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Okay, here are my tips:
1. Put out full flaps and come in as slow as your aircraft permits
2. Descend to runway elevation + about 20 - 30 feet already far away from the runway
3. Reduce power to idle 10 seconds before touchdown and do a little nosedive to keep the speed high enough
4. Apply parking brake already in the air

Note please that these tips might only work for the Cap10B and Cap10C !

And to do the 180 degree turn at the end of the runway, it's probably best to drive up the hillside a bit - there is more room than on the runway (propeller aircarfts can't go reversed  !).
