Spam attack

Postby MyName » Tue Apr 14, 2009 10:36 pm

Recently, I have noticed that the forum was being constantly spammed. I thought that members had to be approved by the mods!

So far I have found five spammers, but I don't know what to do about it except add them to my foes list.
Need names? I got'em: TeamnTatIdeab, margueritepea, conniedavis, christinayates, and cherylturner.
I would imagine to produce such a large amount of spam in such a short amount of time would require the use of bots. Maybe this forum should also have one of those security things in which you have to type a set of letters that appear as an image in order to post something, which would prevent bots from being able to post anything to the forum.

Calm, folks. Calm.

Don't enable and empower these types of Jackasses by responding to their posts, reading their posts, or visiting the websites. And for goodness sakes don't alter your routine or begin a discussion and get all upset...it just encourages more spam.

There are abusers everywhere. It'll pass. Just don't respond and empower them..
Done!

what in the name of...

how the heck did this much spam end up here ?, Which version of phpbb is this ?

They all seem to originate from the same location so a little .htaccess magic should stop them :)... as for blocking their Ip's they are probably behind a proxy so add these lines to stop that
Code: Select all
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP:VIA}                 !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:FORWARDED}           !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:USERAGENT_VIA}       !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:X_FORWARDED_FOR}     !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:PROXY_CONNECTION}    !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:XPROXY_CONNECTION}   !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:HTTP_PC_REMOTE_ADDR} !^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:HTTP_CLIENT_IP}      !^$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ - [F]

I don't envy whoever has to delete these, it's going to take forever even if you prune them

I hope they don't start overloading the Mysql database for this forum... that would be annoying :)

P.s - don't waste your time by adding them to your foes list they are not organic they are bot's. theres no way to hurt their feelings

[edit] this is almost as bad as ddos, the bots are all still connected, and I think whoever is doing this is using XRumer because to be honest Phpbb doesnt stand a chance against it, nor does VB or IPB

There are 8 pages of new topics. The list of new topics probably wouldn't even fill one whole page if this spam wasn't there. I have no idea what kind of tools the admin has available to him, but I hope he can eliminate these spammers some how.
HOLY CRAP!!! A search for the word "prescription" gives me 438 results! That's just WRONG!

I don't add them to my foes list to hurt their feelings. I just don't want to see their crap.

Oh right . I hadn't thought of that, or that anyone would wake up at 5AM just to get on the forum. It's midnight for me.

I didn't get up don't worry, I simply havn't been to sleep, for about two days now :)

I'm a little caught up with spam problems on my site but I think I cleared it up using the "deny from" stuff.

We're at 473 spam topics! Anyone think we'll get beyond 500 before the moderator checks? How about 1000?
Man, this is nuts!
