LIPX (Verona Villafranca)

Postby elgaton » Mon Dec 16, 2013 10:54 am

Hi all,
I started to enhance LIPX (my home base) since I'm quite familiar with this airport and I felt it needed much improvement. I think that, despite its small size, it might be the ideal starting (or ending) point for those of you who want to fly in the Northern Italy area and to admire the Alps and the Italian Lake District.

SCREENSHOTS (taken using the April 18th, 2014 beta release):

...and lining up again on runway 04, this time in CAT IIIb conditions

PLANNED FEATURES:
  • Built from scratch using OSM/CORINE and other open data.
  • Extremely high level of detail: ground signs, markings, lights, objects will be modeled and placed accurately - just like the real thing. Nothing more, nothing less.
  • Airport buildings and hangars.
  • Rembrandt lights.
  • Ground network and parking positions included; if I manage to find an open database, standard departure/arrival procedures will be added as well.
  • Fully GPL compatible, which means this project can (and will) be added in future scenery releases.

RELEASE DATE:
the 2D part is (almost) complete; there is no release date planned for the 3D buildings. I plan to release regular TerraSync updates every time a major phase is complete. Additionally, you will always be able to download an updated beta release from this first post (testing and feedback are always welcome).

DOWNLOADS:
Latest release (updated on December 12th, 2016): https://github.com/NIATCA-project/LIPX-custom-scenery/releases/download/2016-12-18/LIPX-20161218.zip (198,1 MiB). (SHA256 checksum: 0338e4f56cbc2b744fbacd395a23235533ecdd61641a65c97b8a4715b9638ab8)
The source code is available at the LIPX custom scenery GitHub repository.
An X-Plane version is published on the Airport Scenery Gateway: however, it does not reflect the latest changes as I'm still adding 3D objects to the apt.dat file. I will upload my work to the Gateway once all objects are in place.

KNOWN BUGS:
  • There are terrain discontinuities at the edge of the 1x1 tile.
  • Lake Garda and some rivers are rendered at the sea level.
  • A bridge (south of Lake Garda) is not rendered - the street "drops" to sea level there.

CHANGELOG AND CURRENT STATUS:
Code: Select all
2016-12-18 (beta):
- Added the 2016 apron layout changes.
- Started adding 3D objects in X-Plane.
2015-04-12:
- Added airports in the same 1x1 tile as LIPX so that they are shown correctly
even if the complete tile from TerraSync is not installed.
- Added OSM street, rail and river data.
2015-03-19 (RC2):
- Removed ILS and threshold XML files as they caused the ILS and runway to
  disappear from the map.
2015-03-19 (RC1):
- Apron stands completed, apron roadways added.
- Airport signs redone from scratch.
- Fixed wrong tag in the ILS description file.
- Fixed missing taxiway centerlines on B, C, F.
- Ground network created.
2015-02-01:
- Closed some holes in the apron (where the terminal buildings are meant to be).
- Taxi signs repositioned/added and corrected.
- Markings on the apron are being done.
- All parking positions added.
2014-09-03:
- Fixed some syntax errors in signs to allow the airport to be uploaded to the
  X-Plane Airport Scenery Gateway.
- Added markings (old stands) on the first and second "loops". Markings on the
  third loop are in progress.
2014-04-18:
- Fixed the ILS service road position.
- Added the apron for the service areas (cargo and technological terminals).
- Fixed runway threshold positions.
- Corrected the approach lights types.
- Smoothed some taxiways.
- Added taxiway markings, centerline and edge lights, plus some signs - many of
them still need to be put in the correct position and/or smoothed.
- Began to add parking stands to the apron. Some parking positions were added to
the XML file, all of them will be finalized after work on the stands is
  completed.
- Adjusted taxiway texture headings where necessary.
- Added right airport beacon position.
- Fixed ILS/tower positions (the ILS still needs a bit of work).
2014-01-17:
- Third "loop" and service streets completed.
- Airport boundary, PAPI, windsocks added.
- Radio frequencies updated to match the real ones.
2013-12-26:
- Second "loop" between taxiways C and D completed, work on the third one
(between taxiways A and B) in progress.
2013-12-16:
- Apron and runway imported from OSM, work on the taxiways in progress.

I think your link might actually be http://www.alessandromenti.it/downloads/lipx-flightgear/LIPX-beta-20131216.zip instead of .png.
Thanks for your work improving the airport.

Very nice. While developing the new tg-construct, I usually tested by flying out of LIMA. I found that many of the airports in northern Italy are still using code '10' (the non curved) taxiways. Any work converting these to newer airport data formats is much appreciated!

Actually in my installation it doesn't, and it steadfastly refuses to update west of the 013 longitude and North of 41 latitude. I've even tried manually installing the scenery, hasn't fixed it.

I've been getting these all along since 2.0 scenery has come out, but it hasn't seemed to stop TerraSynch from loading new scenery until now

@Johan G: you should either 1) use a Subversion client and issue the "cleanup" command on those directories, or 2) search those directories for files named "lock" and delete them.

Anyway, turning back on topic... I've uploaded a new beta release (progress is a bit slow, but tracing the taxiways is the hardest part). Due to the high polygon count I have experienced slowdowns when running at maximum quality; however, my graphics card is not among the top performing ones, so the lags could be attributed to that.

Could you please check if the latest beta release of the scenery allows FG to run at an acceptable frame rate for you?

Unfortunately, unlike x-plane, we don't generate the airport at runtime ( a feature I hope to reach someday ) - x-plane can reduce the complexity of the bezier curves on less capable hardware. genapts850 just generates 8 segments for each bezier. If you are placing lots of nodes, then you'll get tons of segments. Best practice is to place as few nodes as possible, and let the bezier curve approximate the taxiway. i.e. don't 'micromanage' the nodes.

Thanks for your tips! I have already made sure to place as few nodes as possible and to make ample use of Bezier curves; however, I'd still like some testers to report the performance of the scenery to get an idea of what the framerates may be on a variety of graphic cards (I don't have access to any other decent systems at the moment, so I am unable to test that personally). That will help me decide if I should keep the current level of detail or if I should approximate some less important areas, such as the three upper loops.

To give you an idea of the slowdowns, I compared the performances of my scenery and of EHAM (a rather complex airport). In both cases I enabled 3D clouds, precipitation and particles, I disabled the random buildings feature and chose the 787-8 Dreamliner: at 1336x768, even setting the quality slider to 1 caused noticeable lags to appear at LIPX (the scenery froze once about every 0.2 seconds), while taxiing at EHAM was still a relatively "smooth" experience. On the contrary, by keeping the quality slider to 0 no freezes occurred.

(It must be noted that, while generating the LIPX scenery, I pushed the level of detail of elevation data to a maximum - I chose an accuracy of 5 m and 50000 maximum nodes per .hgt file: I don't know what the parameters used for the official scenery are, but they should be certainly lower than that. Choosing a higher error level for the elevation data should almost certainly bring some benefits).
