New York City

Questions and discussion about enhancing and populating the FlightGear world.

Yes, that is a problem, especially with larger objects - I would still say though don't let that not let you contribute.

If you are interested in changing the underlying terrain, such as the improvements here:
http://mapserver.flightgear.org/map/?lo ... FFTTTFTFFF

the proper free program to do this is probably QGIS, though there are others available. That runs on a Mac. There is a learning curve.

If you're interested in improving San Francisco, I have a shapefile of various parts of the Bay Area partially complete which I can post.

I have now finished Essex House and will continue with more buiding, I will post here before starting on the design to make sure no one else is doing the same. I have decided to create all the models first then do the textures after. I think the next build will be the New Yorker Hotel or Staten Island Ferry Port but will confirm.

Found a good list on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ta ... _York_City

Nope, I haven't started it  this could turn into something real nice!

I'll post pics later of the builds I have done. Spent the day at work with nothing to do so I googled New York to see what it looked like at day and night and I am planning on doing the buildings that have the brightest night textures first. One area got my attention and that was Staten Island Ferry Port, looks great at night. BASICALLY all of NY looks great at night with all of its signs

The whole area is interesting as I'm waiting for Martin to put up new land cover, but Manhattan did not turn out so well during the cleaning so I am going to throw just the Manhattan part of this onto the mapserver once the Bronx and points north get loaded up.

If anyone is interested in doing the Brooklyn Bridge I found this, http://www.endex.com/gf/buildings/bbrid ... efacts.htm

Is the bridge itself level from end to end or does it have a small arc to it?

Suspension bridges can't be level. When modeling the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, I used the assumption that the main wire and the apron follow a parabolic curve.

Great! I've some photos of the lady that I've taken a year ago in New York. Can you send to me the model so that I can texture it? Or do you prefer if I send you the photos and you do the texture work?

I have the Brooklyn Bridge in the works since last summer-- I started it after reading David McCullough's book, "The Great Bridge". I had to set it aside due to work and more pressing projects, but I'll get back to it.
