Howto download aircraft from Git

Postby skyop » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:22 am

For whatever reason "how do I download X aircraft from Git" seems to be a pretty popular question around here, so I figured why not write a guide:

1. Go to http://mapserver.flightgear.org/git/?p=fgdata;a=tree;f=Aircraft.

2. Navigate into the directory of the aircraft you want to download.

3. Just below the top navigation bar, click the big beautiful link labelled "snapshot."

4. Extract and enjoy!

Maybe you add it to the wiki too? ;)

Thank you. I always think of git as something mysterious and arcane.

Don't forget to add a warning about the possibility to get an unuseable aircraft.

Also: Mac users, at least, will need to rename the resulting "fgdata" folder to the aircraft's real name.

Downloading from Git works fine, but I never could upload to git, it gives me a publickey error when trying to upload from my computer to my clone of fgdata. I was following the instructions on the wiki, and it didn't work, also requiring me to copy my updates folders back into the got folder after it had me reset it.

Which is not to say that all the aircraft on the official download page work with 2.0.

It's always a gamble.

I just want to ask:
Is following this wiki: http://wiki.flightgear.org/index.php/Fl ... n_Mac_OS_X the best way to get GIT?

The link provided in the first answer needs to be added to the wiki!!!

I'd say 90% of the people who stick with their version of the game do it because they think it's too complicated! The link is SO USEFULL!

The wiki page, last time I checked, was next to useless for a user relatively unfamiliar with GIT like me. It assumes a not advanced, perhaps, but certain level of experience with compiling programs, etc. Something I don't think the majority of people on this forum have. I'd recommend this guide to most users which can be found here : click - or else!

I tried using this link, but the snapshot feature is disabled. I would like to download the 747-400 by Gijs. Also, i am not very proficient in Linux based systems. Any help to download aircrafts from Git would be appreciated.
