Well if i was you i will reconsider that choice. In my opinion unless you too care about the brand or the luxury of Sony, then another brand would make more sense 8) .With 1600$ you can buy a very strong laptop with much stronger graphic capable and cpu power (you are complete capable to buy an Alienware 17x + GTX660M with that money) OR you can get a much cheaper laptop with same specification.I would recommend Asus,Dell,HP or Lenovo but that is my opinion, the choice is always yours.Good luck finding the new laptop :D

Real contenders on notebooks for gaming are MSI, ASUS (G series) and AlienWare (distributed by DELL)

I'm currently in the research phase of getting a new laptop (simply to get FG running superbly )

I'm currently looking at just getting a really cheap laptop, but custom building it.

Basically what I'm looking for is:
Intel Core i5 @ 3.0 GHz or better
8GB DDR3 memory or better
High end nVidia GPU
500GB Hard Drive or better
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

I'm not exactly the most computer savvy or tech minded person. If somebody would be kind enough to assist me in a decision of what exact specs I'd want for the computer, tell me, please :)

Cheers,
Sam.

It depend on how super performance you want, you can choose a suitable Nvdia GPU for it,if you want incredible FPS with Rembrandt and anti-aliasing then you can look for GTX6xxM ,Alienware have many configuration for you to choose or customize. If you want cheaper solution ypu might want to checkout Asus,MSI and Dell latest version but the price will alway from 1200-2000 if you want to have the Nvidia GTX series.

I`m not so sure about that. A GeForce 330 is quite old and not that good.

First, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT ALIENWARE! Second, a GTX series card isn´t necessarily needed to run FG at max settings, a GT650M will do just fine. But then again a GT650M is gonna work better if the res is 1366x768. 1600x900 might still be fine but you will most likely have problems at 1920x1080. I´m saying that because gaming lappies have full HD displays and they have high end GPU`s that have the necessary cooling to use their full power, but the GT650M is mainstream and it`s possibly underclocked compared to a desktop equivalent, because the laptops using it don´t have gigantic heatpipes and fans like you have in gaming laptops. But basically, before you wanna buy a computer, you need to know about your budget.

First, even an intel integrate HD3000 can run FG, GT330 will be no trouble on normal configuration.
Second,he say he want to run superbly,GT650 can run shader at max setting but i bet it will suffer FPS drop with Urban shader max, that not mention Rembrandt in FG2.8,an optional V-sync and an AA solution.Combine all three element GT650 may hard to reach 30 FPS.
But i agree that we should know more about his budget 8)

I want to spend <$900AUD. But if I need to blow that out, the absolute max I'll pay is $1100AUD.

Superbly, well, may have been over the top. I want to have all shaders (except urban, I've got Random Buildings for that, and I'll want that full, ditto vegetation) as well as Rembrandt. AA isn't essential, tbh.

Cheers,
Sam.

It a little hard to have a "high end Nvidia GPU" with 1100 AUD,but at least you canl have a good machine with about GT650-640M.It will run well with your expectation but i'm not sure how much Rembrandt will affect it,i think it can reach 30FPS.Some Dell laptop seem to met your requirement.

Compared to the cards I've got (both in the family desktop, and the horrible school based laptop) even mid-range nVidia is high end for me

Hmm are you sure?....oh well if I'm not mistaken that laptop came out like 2 years ago....and also do I have to consider the processor speed of a laptop or only the graphics card?:? The laptop I need must be able to run FG smoothly with the max fps and also some other university software, which are a lot heavier than FG.......

I've been able to locate an Australian dealer of laptops (new and refurbished) and have found a treat. (I'm happy to have refurbished. Because I can guarantee it'll get in worse state in my possession

CPU Intel® Core™ i7 processor 2630QM (2.0GHz - 2.90GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 6MB L2 Cache)
Operating System Windows® 7 Home Premium (64bit)
Screen Size 15.6" Widescreen HD LED Backlit Display (1366 x 768)
Memory 4GB DDR3 (1333Mhz) (expandable to 16GB)
HDD Storage 750GB (5400rpm) SATA
Graphics NVIDIA® GeForce GT 540M w/Optimus

This laptop _SHOULD_ do what I want it to. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not the most technologically minded person, so I'm kinda relying on advice.

Cheers,
Sam.

Since I'm using Linux and your using Windows my performance results may be slightly deviated (as well as NVIDIA bringing out a new driver for Windows which improves performance, which we don't have yet  ), but here goes.

At full settings, you will most likely be achieving about 30-60 fps (unless I need to clean my heatsink off, performance will degrade as temprature fluctuates). With Rembrandt and on a good day, you might be able to achieve just about 30 fps. Tested with F-14, BTW.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16545&p=159273#p159273A - take this into mind.
