Have a look at the FlightGear Wiki: Howto:Install scenery.

My favourite tool is TerraMaster, a Java applet (Wiki: TerraMaster, forum topic: TerraMaster: a new scenery manager).
Low-level flying — It's all fun and games till someone looses an engine. (Paraphrased from a YouTube video)
Improving the Dassault Mirage F1 (Wiki, Forum, GitLab. Work in slow progress)
Some YouTube videos

Easiest? Tick the Terrasync box, and let FG download scenery automatically as needed. Note that in 2.8 you may need to create a new scenery folder where FG expects to find one.
