FlightGear Crash on LinuxMint "Rebecca" [SOLVED]

Postby D-ECHO » Sat Jul 04, 2015 12:11 pm

Hi
I've just tried to install flightgear on my new own-build computer (Intel i3, intel onboard graphic, Linux Mint 64bit Cinnamon Edition "Rebecca") from ppa:saiarcot895/flightgear-edge.
The installation worked fine, but on the first start, after "Loading Navigation Data", flightgear crashed and wrote:
Code: Select all
FATAL:basic_string::_S_construct null not valid

Can anyone help me? ;)
Regards
D-ECHO
[EDIT]The full output:[/EDIT]
Code: Select all
Enabling ATI viewport hack
Starting automatic scenery download/synchronization. Using built-in SVN support. Directory: '/home/delta/.fgfs/TerraSync'.
FATAL:basic_string::_S_construct null not valid

is that all it wrote? there's not enough there to get started even guessing with :(
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Can I suggest something to try?

Please shut off any and all terrasync and attempt a default scenery load at KSFO. See if the simulator runs and settles for a flight. Then, immediately shut down and let the simulator write it's autosave files.

If any or all of that worked, then maybe try turning on terrasync again and loading somewhere else in the world.

Best to you
--Ray

And then you said what you just said. But maybe try this anyway if you get a chance. The way the simulator works these days is that changes get saved after a successful run. I have a feature request in to make writing the save files something we can trigger in the Menu, and I'm hoping that is something that can help in situations even like the one you describe. But getting a sim running first is part all part of that. Best of luck.

Okay, first thanks very much for the fast help.
@cirCoda: Well, the first try was just typing "fgfs" in a command line, but also that time it crashed (with the same failure)
Update soon
[EDIT]Just one small thing:
On my laptop with the same OS fg 3.4 runs fine, so I expect 3.4 to also run on the new PC ;)
[EDIT2]
Same problem with fg3.4:
Code: Select all
delta@airwork ~ $ fgfs
Enabling ATI viewport hack

Quick question: What is your log level setting (--log_level=<string>)? If you bump that up to "debug" or perhaps even "bulk" do you get more in the log?

fgfs on the command line alone with out any specification of plane or scenery paths or airport should have loaded ( used to load ) a C172P at KSFO automatically.

I can't say the same for 3.5. One might need to provide fgfs.exe some paths is all i'm saying.

Best of luck to you

The wrong thing to do is assume you did everything correct with 3.5 and then continue to do the same wrong thing in every previous version until you mistakenly do the right thing and it works.

Code: Select all
Enabling ATI viewport hack

I'm not sure who "Okay, I'll try" was meant for. In the mean time I was able to get 3.5 to load on the windows Command Line using just 'fgfs' as you suggested earlier. I first had to create a special configuration file called system.fgfsrc in Windows, or .fgfsrc ( note the first dot ) on linux or Mac, and put that into a particular folder. The file only contains the switch that feeds FGFS the route to what's known as FG_ROOT

When I did that I was able to get a default load of a C172P at KSFO by only typing FGFS in the right folder in on the command line.

I'm now looking up how to translate this all to Linux, that will be my next post.
