Flightgear On Steam.

Postby spitfirebruce21 » Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:14 am

Hello again all fellow flightgearers.
One of my friends, blusnowman suggested getting Flightgear on steam as a free to play mac and pc game, as steam are looking for a flight sim....
he is working on a source code, any suggestions?
also, we would like a bit of support, plus we want permission.
Thankyou.

You guys have all the permission in the world, FG IS under the GNU GPL license meaning you technically could. I'd just have an EXTREMELY careful read of Steam's licencing and documents before you do anything.

Oh and probably e-mail Gijs and Curt before you slog it over.

cross-countries
airliner routes
pilot careers
etc

the tutorial system is probably the easiest option to implement "missions".

A bit more detail Hooray, as we kinda need detail, like what does the player have to do to use these?

You'd also kinda need good Grammar (good thing you've improved (: )

Perhaps if, for Airline Pilot Career (or whatever floats your boat), you get achievements if you do certain things. Furthermore, if you fly, say 50 hours in a single aircraft in a single livery, you get an achievement or Steam credit or whatever.

As connect said, be extremely careful about Steam's conditions.

Although this situation is unlikely, Steam might have the power to rebrand FG because it is open source and we don't want another duplicate.

As I said, that is an unlikely situation but you will have nothing to lose if you are safe.

You can maybe let FG players download extra add on missions via Steam and if you combine this with an unlock mission system, after users finish or unlock missions they could download more.

One more thing, don't forget to mention ALL the developers who helped create FG into what it is now. (Not saying to make a whole long list, just say something like 'FG wouldn't be possible without the developers' or something like that.)

Cheers,
Vini

Personally, I don't think handing FG off to a third-party distributor is a safe idea in the first place... I would strongly discourage doing so for the reasons Vinura said.
(Of course, if Curt and Gijs say otherwise, then I'll reconsider)

However, the achievement bit sounds pretty interesting...
For starters, how're things like this?

Out of Noobville: Start up or fly out of the San Francisco Bay default scenery area for the first time
Crippled Miracle: Perform a successful landing from an altitude of at least 5000ft AGL with all engines failed
First Words: Connect to FGCom for the first time
Wannabe Architect: Publish 5 scenery models to the FG Scenery Repository
The Flying Ballerina: Recover from a downwash or mid-air spin in a helicopter without crashing
Dirty Hands, Dirty Gears: Successfully make dirt runway landings at five different airfields
Icarus on Fire: Fly at least 100nm in one flight with the Jetman
Flying among Aliens: Perform one planned flight filed and tracked by VATSIM
Pyromaniac: Make a wildfire with the Bombable feature
Look for "B-BIRD" "N127KY" or "AVA0004" -that's me.

Despite having over 1700 posts here, I am not even close to being the most skilled guy here... I'm just words and bad drawing, not experience. :P

Me and Blusnowman are being VERY cautious about a 3rd copy of fg, but steam is after a flight simulator + a few more free to play mac and windows, on behalf of me and Blusnowman i apologies to all linux users, as steam isn't supported for them, we will thank all the developers, that was one of the main discussions, we need some of the head developers on steam if it goes through, Curt especially, because he can remove the game WHENEVER he feels necessary. Also, looking at some of steams terms and conditions, GNU or not, you can Sew them if they copy it. also, we need a few DLC (Downloadible Content) suppliers, as steam suggests this.
Thank you again,
Lachlan, any further questions just PM me or post here if you think it is necessary.....

For DLC, I'd say Omega Hangar, FGA, Helijahs hangar and Longfly's aircraft list and the official repo's. NOT UFW.

I've crossed off a fair few of those missions already :D

My only concern is, MORE NOOBS :( :( :( :(

Thats what i`m thinking, maybe we should include another area in the base package, where hardly anyone flys.....
any ideas?

YPAD.

But no, as that only moves the problem. Although, if there was to be a different default airport for ONLY Steam DLed FG, maybe it could work.
