In order to help you, we need to know a lot of information. Make sure to include answers to at least the following questions in your initial post.

- what OS (Windows Xp/Vista, Mac etc.) are you running?
- what FlightGear version do you use?
- what graphics card do you have?
- does the problem occur with any aircraft, at any airport?
- where did you download your aircraft/scenery from?
- is there any output printed to the console (black window)?
- copy&paste your commandline (tick the "Show commandline box on the last page of FGRun or the "Others" section on the Mac launcher).

Please report any bugs not specific to an aircraft on the issue tracker.
To run FlightGear on old computers with bad OpenGL support, please take a look at this wiki article.

Note: If you did not get a reponse, even after 7 days, you may want to check out the FlightGear mailing lists to ask your question there.

Big Black Box

Postby statto » Wed Dec 03, 2008 3:48 am

Hello all,

in the windows version of my FlightGear, whenever I load 'er up, there is a big black box covering the leftmost 70% or so of my screen. It stays regardless of view or airplane. I've disabled practically everything in a futile attempt to get it to go away.

What do I need to do, driver update? My Linux computer as I have noted is down for the count right now so I need to get this working ;)

Thanks

I think this is an Intel problem... I'll still be ATCing as that works fine, just a minor annoyance, but no Carreidas jet in my near future =(

Anyone with any thoughts?

This is a strange problem - I think it might be hardware related but everything renders just fine, except for the leftmost 400 pixels or so below a certain "altitude".

If anyone needs screenshots I'll be happy to supply them. I don't wear an eyepatch over my left eye in real life and I don't want Flightgear to wear an eyepatch either if I can help it.

Even more strange, while performing Tower service at TNCM, there was a plane which "flew into" the black-pixel area on the radar! Although they were off of the radar screen, they still showed up in this "black area".

Please upload a screenshot. Your description looks pretty much similar to my situation when I reset FlightGear (except the part of the screen is not black, but frozen)...

Furthermore, the box seems to be a certain distance ahead of the aircraft. When I was flying close to the new KPHX control tower I modelled last night, the tower was behind the box, then as I got very close to the tower, the program rendered it.

Apologies for the poor screenshot quality, I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing in Windows

Cheers

Hm, that's not related to my problem. As told on the IRC channel my problem is solved with OSG 2.7.5+ (I was using 2.7.5)...
Maybey some developers knows more about yours problem? Why not post to the devel-list?

What is you bpp value when you start FG ?
Try starting FG with --bpp=32 or --bpp=24. With fgrun, the option is available in the wizard, just below the choice of the window geometry.
Your black box seems to appear just at the transition between the far camera and the near camera ( there is one camera that displays the sky and scenery background, and another one that display the cockpit and nearest terrain and objects )

My --bpp was set to 16 but I see no difference switching to 24 or 32. 64 is not an option in CVS fgrun.

Hi, statto

I faced the same "Big Black Box" problem with FlightGear v1.99.5-rc2 and (very new) v1.9.0 in my windows XP machine with built-in graphics (nVidia GeForce 6150 LE).

The console outputs are as below:
Code: Select all
  Model Author:  Unknown
  Creation Date: 2002-01-01
  Version:       $Id: c172p.xml,v 1.20 2008/09/01 15:14:33 torsten Exp $
  Description:   Cessna C-172
FGMultiplayMgr - No receiver port, Multiplayermode disabled
KI266 dme indicator #0 initialized
RenderStage::runCameraSetUp(), FBO setup failed, FBO status= 0x8cdd
RenderStage::runCameraSetUp(), FBO setup failed, FBO status= 0x8cdd
Initializing Nasal Electrical System
power up

For my machine, this problem seems to happen when color setting of windows desktop (not flightgear setting) is 16bit color depth.

Please try 32 bit color setting of windows desktop.

Sorry for the late answer- it is "yes".

Upgrade to OSG 2.7.6 (developer version). That fixed a similar issue for me. Current fgfs builds will produce the aforementioned effect with OSG 2.6.1.
